The Formula 500 SSC represents the newest flagship model from Formula Boats, distinguished by its powerful propulsion system comprising four Mercury 600 horsepower V12 engines. This setup delivers a combined 2,400 horsepower, making it a notable vessel in terms of power and engineering innovation.
Engine Configuration and Transom Features
The 500 SSC's propulsion system is unique in that the engines themselves do not turn; instead, the lower units provide steering. This innovation allows the four Mercury V12 engines to be spaced just four inches apart, a tight configuration that enhances performance and serviceability. The transom area is designed with practicality in mind, featuring pull-up cleats, grab handles, shore power with an electric cord reel, and easy access to engine parallel batteries, freshwater flush systems, and emergency engine stops. The swim platforms extend 7 feet 5 inches from the transom and are 18 inches wide, with extensions on both sides to facilitate access to the propellers. The entire engine cowling is removable for maintenance, and the fly-by-wire steering system eliminates hydraulic components, resulting in a clean and efficient installation.
Operational Compartments and Systems
Beneath the transom, an expansive storage compartment houses critical operational components.
