Important: Some specifications differ slightly between published brochures and individual boats. In particular, the advertised 48-foot length excludes the bow platform, while the overall length is approximately 51 feet.

2. Engine and Performance Specifications

The 2006 Formula 48 Yacht is commonly equipped with twin Cummins QSM11 diesel engines.

Engine manufacturer Cummins

Engine model QSM11

Engine configurationTwin inboard diesel

Horsepower per engine 660 hp

Combined horsepower 1,320 hp

Transmission Marine inboard transmission

Fuel type Diesel

Typical cruising speed Approximately 24-26 knots

Maximum speed Approximately 32-33 knots

These engines give the yacht a good balance of cruising performance and long-distance capability. Published model reviews report cruising speeds in the mid-20-knot range and maximum speeds around 32-33 knots. Actual performance depends on engine condition, vessel loading, hull cleanliness, sea conditions, and propeller setup.

What does that mean in practical terms?

• At cruising speed: Approximately 28-30 mph at 24-26 knots.

• At maximum speed: Approximately 37-38 mph at 32-33 knots.

• Best use: Coastal cruising, lake cruising, entertaining, and overnight trips.

Fuel consumption and range

The yacht has a 400-gallon fuel capacity.

Actual fuel consumption varies considerably with speed and loading, so a precise range should not be assumed from tank capacity alone.

For trip planning, you should obtain a fuel-burn chart for the specific engines and verify consumption at your intended cruising speed.

For a used boat, ask for engine diagnostic reports and recent fuel-consumption data before estimating its practical range.

3. Exterior and Cockpit Features

The Formula 48's exterior is designed for entertaining and comfortable cruising.

Key features

Spacious cockpit

• Large seating area for socializing.

• Seating capacity designed to accommodate approximately 10 people.

• Expansive layout suitable for entertaining family and friends.

Protected helm

• Ergonomically arranged helm station.

• Large, easy-to-read instrumentation.

• Integrated engine controls and navigation electronics.

• Available cockpit air conditioning on appropriately equipped boats.

Swim and boarding access

• Aft access to the water for swimming and waterside activities.

• Boarding arrangements and swim-platform equipment vary by configuration.

Hardtop and weather protection

• Some boats have an optional hardtop.

• Additional weather protection depends on the installed canvas, enclosure, and equipment.

Exterior styling

• Sleek express-yacht profile.

• Fiberglass construction.

• Formula's distinctive hull graphics and finish options.

The exact exterior equipment depends on the original factory options and any upgrades made by previous owners.

4. Interior Layout and Accommodations

One of the Formula 48's biggest advantages is its interior space.

Main salon

The salon offers a comfortable indoor living area with:

• Premium upholstery.

• Cherrywood cabinetry and trim.

• Lounge seating.

• Entertainment equipment.

• Generous headroom of approximately 7 feet.

Forward owner's stateroom

The forward cabin provides:

• A dedicated sleeping area.

• Storage for clothing and personal belongings.

• Access to the yacht's interior living spaces.

Aft guest stateroom

The aft cabin is a particularly useful feature because it can serve as:

• A guest bedroom.

• A second sleeping area for family.

• An additional lounge or den.

Bathrooms

The standard layout includes two heads, with shower facilities.

The aft stateroom's private head and shower are especially convenient when multiple people stay aboard.

Accommodation summary

Interior feature: Private staterooms, 2 Heads/bathrooms, 2 Main salon with Full galley

5. Galley and Kitchen Features

The Formula 48 is well equipped for extended day trips and overnight stays.

Depending on the boat's original equipment and subsequent upgrades, galley features can include:

• Three-burner cooktop.

• Microwave oven.

• Refrigerator.

• Countertop food-preparation area.

• Cabinets and storage compartments.

• Sink and freshwater system.

The large L-shaped galley is one of the features highlighted in reviews of this model. It provides more practical food-preparation space than many smaller express cruisers.

6. Electronics, Navigation and Entertainment

The yacht was offered with a range of navigation and entertainment equipment.

Navigation and helm

Depending on configuration, equipment may include:

• Raymarine chartplotter.

• Radar.

• Autopilot.

• Compass.

• Engine monitoring instruments.

• Depth, speed, and water-temperature instrumentation.

Entertainment

Factory equipment and options may include:

• Bose Lifestyle audio system.

• Cockpit stereo.

• Flat-screen LCD televisions.

• Cabin entertainment system.

Climate control

The yacht can feature marine air conditioning to keep the salon and cabins comfortable in warm weather.

Buying tip: Electronics installed in 2006 are now approximately 20 years old. Confirm which systems are operational, and budget for replacement if the boat still has its original navigation displays.

The exact equipment package can vary substantially between individual boats.

7. Electrical and Mechanical Systems

The Formula 48 is designed to support extended time aboard.

Depending on configuration, the boat may include:

• Marine generator.

• Battery charger.

• Shore-power connection.

• Marine air-conditioning system.

• Freshwater pressure pumps.

• Hot-water heater.

• Automatic fire-suppression system.

• Electric windlass.

• Marine sanitation systems.

The original equipment list for this model includes a Westerbeke generator in the tested configuration, although individual boats may have different generators or replacement equipment.

When inspecting a used example, test the generator under load and verify that the air conditioning, refrigeration, electrical system, and freshwater pumps operate correctly.

8. Fuel, Water and Storage Capacities System Capacity Diesel fuel 400 gallons Freshwater 100 gallons Waste holding tank 75 gallons

These capacities are useful for planning trips and determining how long you can remain aboard without replenishing supplies.

Keep in mind that practical cruising range also depends on engine fuel burn, reserve requirements, generator use, passenger load, and sea conditions.

9. Advantages of the 2006 Formula 48 Yacht1. Strong performance

Twin 660-hp diesel engines provide a combined 1,320 hp, giving the yacht impressive performance for its size.

2. Spacious interior

Two private staterooms, two heads, and a full galley make it suitable for overnight trips and extended weekends.

3. Entertaining space

The cockpit seating and salon offer separate areas for entertaining, relaxing, and enjoying meals.

4. Substantial freshwater and fuel capacity

The 400-gallon fuel capacity and 100-gallon freshwater tank support longer outings, subject to actual consumption and onboard demand.

5. Versatility

It can serve as a family cruiser, entertaining platform, weekend getaway boat, or comfortable lake yacht.

6. Inboard diesel propulsion

The twin inboard diesel configuration is attractive to buyers who prefer conventional shaft-driven marine propulsion over sterndrives.

10. Potential Disadvantages and Maintenance Considerations

Because this is a 2006 model, condition and maintenance history are more important than the original specifications alone.

A marine surveyor and diesel mechanic should inspect both engines before purchase.

Ask for:

• Engine service records.

• Engine-hour verification.

• Diagnostic reports.

• Cooling-system inspection.

• Oil and coolant analysis where appropriate.

• Sea-trial results at cruising and higher engine loads.

A well-maintained example can be an attractive cruiser, but neglected diesel engines or aging onboard systems can result in significant repair expenses.

11. Is the 2006 Formula 48 Yacht Worth Buying?

The Formula 48 is worth considering if you want a large express yacht with strong performance, comfortable accommodations, and enough space for entertaining.

It is particularly appealing for buyers who want:

• A yacht for cruising on large lakes or coastal waters.

• Two private cabins for family and guests.

• Twin diesel engines.

• A large cockpit and comfortable salon.

• Overnight and weekend cruising capability.

However, I would prioritize maintenance records, engine condition, and the results of an independent marine survey over cosmetic appearance.
