Formula 350 Crossover Bowrider: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Formula 350 CBR R, known as the Crossover Bow Rider, is a versatile boat that combines the functionality of a bow rider with the capability of an overnighter. This model has been updated with a significant change in its propulsion system, now powered by triple 350 horsepower Mercury V10 outboard engines. The boat offers a blend of performance, comfort, and thoughtful design features suitable for day cruising and extended stays.

Exterior Design and Helm Features

The boat's triple Mercury V10 outboards are mounted on a bracket rather than directly on the transom, providing a clean installation. Notably, oil check and fill points are conveniently located on top of each engine for easy access. The propulsion system includes joystick piloting and digital throttle and shift controls, enhancing maneuverability. The helm is equipped with a 12-inch Raymarine vessel view display and remote control, alongside electrical switches and a tilt-mounted steering wheel. Audio amenities include a 200-watt subwoofer integrated with an 800-watt stereo system. Practical features such as numerous beverage holders, an inductive smartphone charger, and a large curved windshield with a stainless steel frame contribute to the helm's functionality. The helm seat is a 41-inch-wide double seat with wraparound backrest and flip-up bolsters, fixed in position, complemented by a large, compartmentalized storage area nearby.

Interior Living Spaces

Below deck, the cabin offers six feet, two inches of headroom and includes a 37-inch bench seat to starboard with storage and a cabinet housing a trash receptacle and paper towel holder. Hardwood-finished drawers and quality joinery enhance the interior craftsmanship. A window provides ventilation and natural light. The galley features a microwave, sink recessed into a Corian countertop, grab handle, storage, and a refrigerator. The wet head includes an electric flush toilet, recessed sink, storage, and an opening port light for harbor views. Additional storage is found above the bench seat, which includes a cedar-lined phone holder and stereo system. The mid cabin berth measures 79 by 57 inches with 27 inches of headroom, and a TV with storage is located on the port side. The cabin is climate-controlled by an 8,000 BTU air conditioning system, ensuring comfort during overnight stays.

Comfort and Cockpit Features

The cockpit area is designed for both relaxation and socializing. A large aft sun pad measuring 47 by 74 inches features seat backs that convert from aft-facing to forward-facing, creating a versatile shade lounge with beverage holders and connectivity options. Storage beneath the sun pad includes dedicated space for a reboarding ladder. The swim platform rises 31 inches above the waterline and is equipped with seven-inch pull-up cleats. The cockpit entrance is offset to port, with a 16-inch-wide passage between the gate and padded bolsters, and includes a hot and cold shower with fresh water flush for the engines. The U-shaped seating area features snap-in carpeting, articulating seat cushions, ample storage beneath, and numerous beverage holders. The cockpit also houses a 5 kW low-emission gas generator with excellent ventilation, fire protection system, and battery storage. A refreshment center with refrigeration and pedestal TV receptacle is located opposite the generator. A 43-inch lounge forward of the cockpit offers comfortable seating facing either the captain or the cockpit, with padded bolsters and connectivity.

Flybridge and Bow Area

An optional hardtop with a manually operated sunroof and electric retractable awning provides shade and weather protection. The walkthrough to the bow is slightly offset to port, with storage compartments on both sides. The bow seating includes a flip-down armrest and removable filler cushion to convert the area into a sun pad. Storage is available beneath the seats, including a waste receptacle and carry-on cooler. The elongated bow rails feature holders for stanchions to support a Mediterranean sunshade. The bow deck includes a gas-assisted hatch over the ground tackle, finished on both sides, with a Lumar windlass managing the all-chain rode through a stainless steel anchor roller. Controls for the windlass are conveniently positioned alongside the hatch, which also provides easy access to the rode locker. Freshwater washdowns are located on both sides of the hatch, and seven-inch cleats and a remote control spotlight are installed fully forward.

Power and Performance

Powered by triple 350 horsepower Mercury V10 outboards turning 22-pitch propellers, the Formula 350 CBR R achieves a top speed of 60.7 miles per hour at 6,422 RPM, based on Mercury Marine's independently verified test data. The boat's best cruise speed is 30.8 miles per hour at 3,500 RPM, with a fuel burn of 28.7 gallons per hour, yielding approximately 1.07 miles per gallon and a range of 243 statute miles. Acceleration tests show the boat reaching 20 miles per hour in 3.99 seconds and surpassing 30 miles per hour in 5.9 seconds. The boat planes quickly with minimal bow rise and responds well to helm inputs, rolling smoothly into turns without discomfort. Maintaining speed through performance turns requires additional throttle input, which the engines handle effortlessly due to their high torque. The active trim system optimizes running attitude, though manual override is possible for maximum speed and fuel consumption.

Conclusion

The Formula 350 CBR R successfully blends sporty performance with comfortable accommodations and thoughtful design. Its triple outboard setup delivers impressive speed and handling, while the interior and cockpit spaces provide versatility for both day outings and overnight stays. Attention to detail in fit and finish, combined with practical features such as joystick piloting, advanced electronics, and ample storage, make this boat a well-rounded choice for enthusiasts seeking both fun and functionality on the water.
