Power Boat Guide

With her sleek lines and roomy cockpit, the Formula 330 Sun Sport

will appeal to those seeking a high-style family sportboat with the

emphasis on open-air fun. She’s well-constructed on a deep-V hull

with generous beam (for a sportboat), and the subtle-but-colorful

hull graphics do much to accent her low-slung appearance. The

spacious cockpit of the Formula 330 is really what this boat is

all about. Not surprisingly, it comes at the expense of a rather

compact, but comfortable, interior. In spite of the limited cabin

volume, the accommodations are very practical below with a

U-shaped Ultraleather settee/dinette forward, an enclosed head

compartment, and an entertainment center—accommodations well

suited for her day boat mission. The cockpit table at the transom

converts into a wide sun lounge, and a molded on-deck galley

conceals a sink, a 54-quart cooler, and an optional alcohol stove.

Additional features include a ski locker, dive-tank racks, a walkthrough

windshield and guest seating opposite the helm. A good

performer with 320hp MerCruiser sterndrives, the Formula 330 SS

cruise at 28 knots and top out in the mid 40s.

Overview

The Formula 330 SunSport represents 46 years of excellence and tradition, offering a unique blend of offshore performance and cruising amenities. Introduced in 2003, this model occupies a niche between Formula's offshore and cruising boats, making it an ideal day boat for those seeking both speed and comfort. Notably, the 330 SunSport features options such as a stainless steel windshield and fiberglass arch, enhancing its sleek and stylish design.

Exterior Design and Deck Features

The 330 SunSport boasts a performance-proven hull with distinctive Enron hull side graphics and coordinated topside appointments that emphasize both style and function. The boat’s 33-foot overall length and 10-foot 2-inch beam provide a stable and spacious platform. Molded-in steps leading to the bow offer secure footing and additional seating when entertaining. The cockpit is designed as a social hub, featuring a large ski locker beneath the lounge for storing water sports equipment, a molded fiberglass galley with a 54-quart Igloo cooler, integrated sink with covers, and ample lounge seating around a double table that converts into a large sunbed. The expansive swim platform includes convenient amenities such as a transom shower, telescoping ladder, stereo controls, and dockside connections.

Interior Living Spaces

Below deck, the cabin offers a comfortable and well-appointed environment with 5 feet 7 inches of headroom. The portside galley includes a microwave, refrigerator, and an in-counter trash receptacle, complemented by an illuminated locker for easy access to provisions. Entertainment is provided by a Kenwood AM-FM CD stereo system with two 100-watt marine speakers. The salon features a luxurious ultra-leather U-shaped dinette lounge that converts into a double berth, providing versatile sleeping accommodations. The private head compartment is equipped with a manually operated toilet connected to a 26-gallon holding tank, a molded vanity with sink, a retractable showerhead faucet, and an exhaust fan. The interior finishes include burl wood and brushed metallic accents, creating an elegant atmosphere.

Helm and Instrumentation

The helm station is a blend of artistry and functionality, featuring a burl wood and brushed metallic dash panel. Backlit BDO Ocean instrumentation and a digital depth finder provide clear, easy-to-read data in various lighting conditions. Controls such as waterproof rocker switches and levers are ergonomically placed within easy reach, including separate stereo controls at the helm. This well-designed command center ensures precise handling and convenient operation, making it the focal point for both navigation and social interaction.

Power and Performance

The Formula 330 SunSport offers twin engine options and weighs approximately 9,700 pounds. It features a generous fuel capacity of 120 gallons, supporting extended outings. Performance testing revealed rapid acceleration, with the boat planing in 4.9 seconds and reaching 30 miles per hour in 7 seconds. The optimal cruising speed was found to be around 29 miles per hour at 3,000 RPM, consuming 18.7 gallons per hour and providing a range of approximately 170 miles. At full throttle, the boat achieved speeds exceeding 53 miles per hour at 4,900 RPM, with a range of about 120 miles between refueling stops. Handling is characterized by the control and responsiveness expected from Formula’s design pedigree.

Conclusion

The Formula 330 SunSport successfully combines muscular performance with comfortable accommodations, making it a versatile choice for day boating and overnight stays. Its thoughtful design, both above and below deck, supports socializing, entertaining, and water sports activities, while its powerful engines and efficient fuel consumption ensure enjoyable and extended time on the water.
