The PowerBoat Guide had this to say:

When it comes to making boats, Formula pushes all the right buttons: Its sportboats are quiet, comfortable and fuel efficient, and they’re among the most reliable on the water. The 310 Bowrider delivers each of those attributes, and then some. Introduced in 2008, this big open-bow runabout combines top- notch construction with luxury-class amenities and authentic sports-car performance. She rides on a solid fiberglass deep-V hull with moderate beam and a very aggressive 22 degrees of transom deadrise. Designed to spend all day on the water, the U-shaped cockpit lounge with stowable table easily converts to a sun-pad by adding the filler cushions. The forward port side lounge provides dedicated dive tank storage underneath, and the molded wet bar includes a stainless sink, Corian counter-top, and a pullout refrigerator. In-floor wakeboard and ski storage is also provided. To port, the lockable head compartment features a VacuFlush toilet and a sink with Corian counter. The 310’s aft-facing transom lounge also extends to a sun-pad for relaxing at anchor. Note the large transom compartment for storing two fenders and assorted gear.

Formula 310 Bowrider: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Formula 310BR is a 31-foot bow rider that exemplifies impeccable fit and finish combined with advanced handling characteristics. Its standout feature is the innovative power plan, which includes twin 430 horsepower Ilmor 6.2-liter GDI engines. These engines provide impressive performance in a compact package, contributing to the boat's versatility for cruising, entertaining, and watersports.

Power and Performance

Under the hatch, the Formula 310BR houses a pair of new Gen 5 Ilmor 6.2-liter GDI engines, each rated at 430 horsepower. These engines are notably smaller than competing 8.2-liter models while delivering equivalent power, thanks to direct fuel injection that enhances torque by approximately 10% and broadens the effective torque range from 3200 RPM to the top end. The closed cooling exhaust manifold design eliminates raw water exposure, reducing corrosion risks and enabling an optional seven-year, 1,000-hour corrosion warranty on exhaust manifolds. Maintenance is simplified with relocated service points, a crank-mounted raw water pump requiring only three bolts for impeller changes, and visually accessible raw water strainers. The aluminum block and head contribute to weight savings, improving acceleration by 15% and optimizing cruise economy. Electrical upgrades include 95-amp alternators, independent battery chargers for each battery, and integrated EPDM technology that replaces traditional fuses and breakers with a simple reset function via the Merlin display.

Helm and Control Systems

The helm features a molded fiberglass console available in charcoal or mocha, centered around a 9-inch multifunction display flanked by analog gauges and outdrive trim indicators. A 7-inch Merlin display provides detailed engine diagnostics and extensive control options. Optional OneDrive system upgrades include OneTouch Pro with anchor assist and planing assist functions. Anchor assist maintains heading and position using engine and shift controls, while planing assist automatically adjusts outdrive trim to optimize cruise performance and reduce porpoising by learning and adapting to changing conditions. The joystick control offers precise docking maneuvers with a hydraulic clutch system that enables smooth, rapid gear shifts. The Merlin screen visually represents joystick rotation, travel direction, and thrust level. Additional helm features include trim tab controls with programmable memory, engine sync, single-lever controls, electrical switches, stereo and VHF controls, and convenient charging ports.

Exterior Design and Cockpit Features

The Formula 310BR measures 31 feet overall with a 9-foot 6-inch beam and a 37-inch draft. The boat’s weight during testing was approximately 11,123 pounds, including fuel and two passengers. The extended sport swim platform is 41 inches deep and features additional side steps, 8-inch pull-up cleats, and a non-skid dolphin gray woodgrain vinyl decking that remains cool underfoot. A protective rail surrounds the platform for safety and docking protection, with a central reboarding ladder. The cockpit is accessed via a 15-inch wide port walkway and two steps with a safety gate. It includes a continuous molded deck and liner with vinyl decking throughout. Seating comprises a U-shaped bench to starboard with optional pedestal tables and filler cushions to create a sun pad. The helm and aft seats feature flip bolsters, beverage holders, grab rails, and recessed speakers. A wet bar with a Corian countertop, sink, 29-gallon water tank, prep area, and a cockpit refrigerator enhances convenience. Additional seating includes a 64-inch inward-facing bench on the port side with storage and a wastebasket beneath. Courtesy lighting is integrated throughout the cockpit area, including cup holders and deck level.

Bow and Additional Features

The bow area offers wraparound seating with removable filler cushions that convert the space into a sunning area with three-across seating. Flip-down armrests provide comfort, and a pedestal table receiver is embedded in the deck. The bow features stainless beverage holders, charging ports, grab handles, and ample storage beneath the seats. The ground tackle is housed under a hatch with a lift-and-lock latch and gas strut, containing an optional electric windlass managing an all-chain rode through a chain stopper and anchor roller. Rails along the cap rails support optional bow canopy attachments. The windshield is framed in stainless steel and can be closed off with a lower air dam for added protection in cooler conditions.

Head Compartment and Storage

Located in the port console, the head compartment provides 4 feet 6 inches of headroom and includes a porcelain Vacuflush toilet plumbed to a 36-gallon holding tank with dockside pumpout. The space features a molded vanity with a stainless steel sink, Corian countertop, mirrored cabinet storage, and color-coordinated woodgrain flooring. Ventilation is provided by an electric exhaust fan, a hallside opening port, and a sliding opaque window facing the cockpit. A small storage hatch with a gas strut adds convenience.

Performance Summary

During testing with twin 430-horsepower Ilmor 6.2-liter GDI engines turning 28-inch propellers, the Formula 310BR reached a top speed of 59 miles per hour at 5350 RPM. The best economic cruise was recorded at 3000 RPM and 23.9 miles per hour, consuming 15.5 gallons per hour, which equates to 1.5 miles per gallon and a range of 191 miles with a 10% fuel reserve. The boat demonstrated excellent handling in calm seas, effectively shedding wakes and spray away from the cockpit and windshield. Acceleration was brisk, turns were solid with no prop ventilation or chine walk, and the boat maintained a stable five-degree bow-high attitude without manual trim adjustments, relying on the Ilmor Auto Trim System.

Conclusion

The Formula 310BR combines upscale features, versatile seating arrangements, and advanced power and control systems to deliver a refined boating experience. Its partnership with Ilmor engines enhances operational convenience and performance, while the boat’s thoughtful design and high-quality finishes make it suitable for a broad range of recreational activities. Overall, the 310BR stands out in its class for both functionality and style.
