Ferretti Custom Line: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Ferretti 112 is a distinguished mega yacht that represents a stretched evolution of the company's earlier 94-foot model. This particular hull is the first of its kind available in the United States, offering significantly increased living space. Unlike traditional mega yachts that often feature stacked, tiered designs, the 112 presents a sleek, elongated profile that balances luxurious accommodations with impressive speed capabilities.

Exterior Design and Deck Features

At the stern, the Ferretti 112 boasts a large electrically operated transom door that reveals a spacious boathouse. Our test vessel was equipped with a rigid inflatable boat powered by a 175-horsepower water jet, with ample room for additional personal watercraft. The swim platform is finished in teak and includes storage for dive compressors and tanks. A notable feature is the manual steering system with an intercom to the bridge, providing redundancy in case of electronic failure. The swim ladder extends approximately five feet underwater, facilitating easy access for divers to return to the yacht, shower off, and proceed directly to the aft lounge area. Boarding options include a stainless steel, teak-treaded Besenzoni passerelle activated by button when med moored, or removable stairway ladders when docked. The aft lounge area serves as an ideal space for al fresco dining, complemented by an electronically lowering flat-screen television. Docking controls are discreetly housed in a port-side locker. Full-length side decks provide crew with safe passage to the foredeck, which features twin stainless steel anchor windlasses, lighting for night operations, and a large sun pad for relaxation underway. Non-skid walkways allow easy cleaning access to the windshield, and a sizable storage locker with a dedicated davit facilitates loading heavy equipment.

Interior Living Spaces

Accessed through two automatic stainless steel doors from the aft lounge, the main salon of the 112 is designed with an open plan that enhances spaciousness by minimizing bulkheads. The layout includes an L-shaped lounge aft and a formal dining area forward that comfortably seats eight guests beneath recessed lighting. A wet bar is fully equipped with a hot and cold water sink, ice maker, and generous bottle storage. An electrically raising flat-panel television is integrated into fine cabinetry for entertainment. The adjacent port-side hallway leads to the galley, which is arranged in an L-shape and features twin under-counter refrigerator-freezers, a full-size side-by-side refrigerator-freezer, and a wine cooler. The galley is outfitted with professional-grade appliances including a microwave, convection oven, and twin dishwashers, enabling the preparation of gourmet meals for guests and crew alike.

Crew Quarters

Crew accommodations are accessed via a port-side stairway from the galley. The crew area includes a comfortable salon with its own galley, television, microwave, and food warmer, as well as a laundry and utility room. Sleeping quarters comprise a captain's stateroom with an en-suite head and shower, a mate's stateroom also with en-suite facilities, and two additional crew cabins with bunk beds sharing access to head and shower combinations. Overall, the yacht provides comfortable living space for six to seven crew members.

Guest Accommodations

Forward of the galley lies the VIP stateroom, featuring a centerline double berth that can be raised or lowered at the push of a button, his and her vanities, and dual heads with a shared shower compartment. A stairway to starboard descends to a foyer serving the guest and owner staterooms. The guest cabins each offer angled double berths and private en-suite heads with showers. The master stateroom is a full-beam suite located midships, providing exceptional stability. It includes a king-size bed, his and her vanities, walk-in closets, and separate his and her en-suite facilities. The owner's head is equipped with a built-in jacuzzi tub, while the his head features a separate shower stall, delivering a luxurious and spacious private retreat.

Bridge and Flybridge

The near full-beam pilothouse is situated just above the galley and is designed to accommodate an extensive array of electronics comparable to those found on small cruise ships. It houses navigation and engine controls, a sophisticated vessel monitoring system with alarms, and a comprehensive communications center for radios and satellite equipment. A large L-shaped lounge to port allows guests to observe the cruising experience comfortably. The expansive flybridge helm features a full complement of electronics that deploy at the push of a button, including instrumentation, engine gauges, thruster controls, and VHF radio. The helm seat is electrically adjustable for enhanced visibility. The flybridge also includes a fully equipped barbecue area with a sink, electric grill, refrigerator, and freezer. Adjacent to this is a hot tub beneath a sun pad, providing a relaxing social space for guests.

Power and Performance

The Ferretti 112 is powered by twin MTU diesel engines delivering a combined output of 5,550 horsepower at wide-open throttle. The engine room is designed with carpeted walkways for easy access to all systems, including a sophisticated fuel management setup with three structural tanks and a single day tank to optimize weight and balance. During sea trials, the yacht's 115-ton displacement handled three-foot seas with ease, maintaining a whisper-quiet environment in the pilothouse at speeds exceeding 33 miles per hour. Acceleration to 30 miles per hour was achieved in just 14 seconds, an impressive feat for a vessel of this size. While the yacht executes wide turns at speed, requiring some acclimation due to stern rumble from lateral movement, maneuvering in tight spaces is facilitated by a powerful bow thruster and stainless steel cap stands aft, which assist in securing lines during challenging conditions.

Conclusion

The Ferretti 112 exemplifies fine Italian design, meticulous craftsmanship, and powerful engineering, resulting in a mega yacht that delivers both luxury and performance. Its sleek profile, expansive and well-appointed living spaces, advanced navigation and control systems, and robust propulsion make it a standout choice among discerning yachtsmen. The combination of speed, comfort, and thoughtful features has earned the 112 widespread acclaim within the boating community.
