Everglades 273CC: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Everglades 273CC is a premium quality center console boat designed for fishing, cruising, and entertaining. Measuring 27 feet 3 inches in length with a 9 foot 3 inch beam, it features a solid build and thoughtful design elements that emphasize safety, utility, and comfort. The boat is powered by optional twin 250 horsepower Yamaha outboards and offers a comprehensive set of standard equipment and features.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The bow area is designed for multifunctional use, featuring an F-facing seat with bolsters that wrap around the boat. Beneath the side bolsters are cup holders, storage cubbies, and connectivity plugs. Forward-facing backrests are removable, allowing the seating to convert into a lounge. The hinged forward seats lift on gas struts to reveal insulated compartments that serve as fish boxes or beverage coolers, each with rod racks for eight rods per side. The forward console seat doubles as a cooler with a 97-quart capacity. The deck includes an 82-gallon insulated fish box with a tension-hinged hatch. Safety is prioritized with powder-coated handrails extending along the gunnels and substantial handholds around seating areas. The boat features a through-the-stem anchor system complete with anchor, chain, line, and a safety clip, complemented by a centerline cleat to manage line strain. A Lumar electric windlass with accessible controls and a well-designed line locker is standard. Storage bins are integrated into the gunnels outboard of the console.

Console and Helm Features

The console houses a head compartment with 5 feet 3 inches of headroom and 3 feet 10 inches of seated headroom. It includes a porcelain toilet with a macerator and holding tank, expandable netting for storage, and two hatches for easy inspection of helm rigging. A power windshield made of tempered glass with a slate green tint lowers at the touch of a button, reducing glare and improving visibility. The helm is ergonomically arranged with the captain positioned to port, a compass placed directly in front, and engine controls angled for ease of use. Instrumentation includes a 7-inch Yamaha Command Link Plus screen centered on the console, flanked by twin 16-inch Garmin multifunction displays. Additional controls include trim tab rockers, a joystick, illuminated accessory switches, and USB plugs. Storage at the helm includes a locking glove box. The VHF microphone placement could be improved to reduce tripping hazards. Battery switches and ignition are located under the wheel, while stereo and autopilot controls are housed in the overhead console, which also contains zippered life jacket storage, lighting, and JL Audio speakers connected to a Fusion 700 stereo system.

Hardtop and Cockpit Amenities

The standard hardtop is supported by a rugged, powder-coated frame bolted to the console rather than the deck, allowing for 19 inches of side deck clearance. Handholds are positioned aft and along the console sides for secure movement in rough conditions. The helm seat is a double-wide unit with individual flip-up bolsters, fatigue-reducing mats on the deck, and an angled footrest. Under the helm seats are racks for Plano tackle boxes and a fire extinguisher. The cockpit prep station includes a sink with a pull-up raw water sprayer and a 34-gallon blue-finished, lighted, circulating live well with rounded corners. Rod racks are located outboard on each side, along with raw and fresh water washdown bibs. The aft cockpit provides 108 square feet of space for fishing or seating, with two padded jump seats that fold up from the stern casting platform. Between the jump seats is an insulated, self-draining 45-quart cooler. The transom features an optional 8-foot Power-Pole on the starboard side and a swim platform on the port side. The entire stern platform swings up on a gas assist strut to reveal the mechanical compartment housing batteries, transducers, bilge pumps, through hulls, and accessible fuel filters.

Construction and Safety

The Everglades 273CC employs ram cap construction, where 8 to 12 large pieces of 6-pound density foam are placed within the hull and bonded under vacuum with resin and fiberglass, creating a solid, heavy-feeling hull, liner, and deck assembly. This construction method enhances safety and structural integrity, contributing to the boat's confident handling and durability.

Performance Evaluation

During testing with twin 250 horsepower Yamaha outboards, the 273CC demonstrated impressive performance. With an estimated test weight of 8,415 pounds including fuel, equipment, and two people, the boat reached a top speed of 51.5 miles per hour at 6,000 RPM in conditions with 20 mph winds and one-foot seas. Best cruise speed was recorded at 32.1 miles per hour at 3,500 RPM, consuming 17.2 gallons per hour, yielding approximately 1.9 miles per gallon and a range of 264 statute miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve. Acceleration was brisk, with planing achieved in 2.9 seconds, 20 mph reached in 5 seconds, and 30 mph in 7.3 seconds. The boat exhibits minimal bow rise during acceleration, quickly settling to a running angle of about 6 degrees. Its sharp bow entry and deep V hull effectively cut through chop and wakes, providing a smooth ride. The hard chine design reduces spray and enhances stability during turns, which are executed cleanly with comfortable leaning angles and no prop ventilation.

Conclusion

The Everglades 273CC is a premium, solidly built center console that excels in design, safety, and performance. Its thoughtful features, robust construction, and well-executed ergonomics set it apart from many other boats in its class. The boat handles confidently in challenging conditions and offers ample amenities for fishing and cruising. Overall, it represents a high standard in center console design and functionality.
