Everglades 230: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Everglades 230DC is a new model from Everglades, a company renowned for their center console fishing boats. This vessel is designed to be both a highly capable fishing platform and a versatile family boat, incorporating numerous innovative features that enhance functionality and comfort.

Exterior Design and Cockpit Features

At the stern, the 230DC features dual casting platforms that flip up to reveal aft seating on either side of a livewell. These seats are easily removable to access battery compartments. The livewell itself has an acrylic top, a blue interior with rounded edges to minimize shock to live bait, and conveniently placed stainless steel grab handles. The starboard side houses the battery switch and main circuit breakers beneath the seat. Rod storage is integrated undergirdle, and courtesy lights are positioned high to project a wide range of illumination. The padded bolsters use two-tone vinyl, and the cap rail is finished with a non-skid surface. Moving forward on the starboard side, there is a thoughtfully designed sink area featuring a grab handle positioned near the arch supports, hook holders, and a cutting board with exposed perimeters for easy washdowns. The pull-out sprayer is mounted on a stainless steel hose to prevent kinking and is plumbed to an unlimited raw water supply. Knife and pliers holders are located in the forward corners, and underneath the cutting board is a carry-on cooler.

Helm Station and Controls

The helm station is equipped with a comfortably overstuffed seat that includes a flip-up bolster. The side windshield frame is flat on top, incorporating grab positions and serving as an armrest. The switch panel is backlit, with toggle switches illuminated when active. Trim tab controls are positioned behind and below the engine controls, featuring LED indicators. Engine instrumentation is provided by Yamaha's multi-function display, allowing ample space for both stereo and moving map displays. The walk-through windshield offers excellent visibility with no obstructive frame, supported by robust side braces. It is engineered with a gas assist strut to prevent slamming in either open or closed positions, heavy gasketing for a tight seal and vibration elimination, and a magnetic catch to hold it open. The lower door, part of a double door system, blocks wind on cooler mornings and can be opened independently or together with the upper door.

Bow Area and Seating

The bow area offers a surprising amount of space, with insulated storage beneath the seats. Hatch covers are fully gasketed and secured with beefy latches. Cushions are held in place by wing nuts, preventing them from blowing away, and when removed, the seats convert into a casting deck. The spacious bow allows for comfortable lounging with ample legroom. Under the forepeak hatch, there is an anchor keeper and a cleat positioned above a stainless steel anchor roller.

Companion Seating and Storage

On the port side, the companion seat exemplifies the boat's clever innovations. It features fully adjustable armrests, a flip-up bolster, and rotates 180 degrees to a chaise lounge position. The seat reclines and folds flat to serve as a leaning post. Beneath the footrest is insulated storage with a hatch supported by a stainless steel strut. Cushions are secured with wing nuts, and drink holders are designed with security in mind. Additional stainless grab handles and sturdy windshield supports enhance safety. Inside the port console is a head compartment, and between the two consoles lies an exceptionally large sole storage compartment.

Construction and Structural Integrity

Everglades emphasizes strength in their construction. The transom is notably thick, featuring a dense foam core as demonstrated by a transom plug. This thickness extends forward, evident in the bow thruster cutout, with all void areas filled with expandable foam to enhance strength and flotation. A large section of this foam is used to fill voids in the bow, contributing to the boat's robust build.

Conclusion

The Everglades 230DC is an innovative, family-friendly fishing boat that combines thoughtful design, practical features, and strong construction. Its versatile layout, ample storage, and attention to detail make it suitable for both serious anglers and family outings, reflecting Everglades' commitment to quality and innovation.
