Summary
This Crowther Custom 46 Catamaran is a finely crafted, high-performance cruising vessel designed for any adventure. Featuring many recent upgrades, spacious living areas, superior stability, and top-tier construction, this exceptional catamaran combines comfort, reliability, and performance.
Hull and General

Ocean Zen, built in 1991 in Stewart, Florida by Bruce Osborne’s Offshore Catamarans, utilizes the molds of the Lock Crowther Super Shockwave. The hull underwent a professional custom refit in 2001, upgrading her layout significantly. The hulls are cored with Corecell foam, making her light and fast. The helm station was later enclosed by Transfusion Boatworks for comfort in rough weather, with pop-out windows for warm summer days. Designed with long, narrow hulls, twin daggerboards, and tulip bows, Ocean Zen features a rotating mast for precise control in various wind conditions and angles. She is easy to sail in light to moderate winds, capable of speeds over 20 knots, and cruises comfortably at 10 knots under power.

Engines

Ocean Zen is powered by (2) outboard 25hp gasoline engines, allowing for a cruising speed of 10kts without compromising GPH

Overall, the 1991 Crowther 46 Catamaran is celebrated for blending performance, comfort, and durability.

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 1991 Crowther 46 Catamaran is a well-regarded sailing vessel known for its performance and durability. Here are some of the key pros and cons of this model:

Pros

Speed and Performance: Designed by Lock Crowther, this catamaran is known for its excellent sailing performance, offering impressive speed and agility on the water.

Spacious Layout: The 46-foot length provides ample living and storage space, making it comfortable for extended cruising or liveaboard use.

Stability: The twin-hull design offers superior stability compared to monohulls, resulting in a smoother and more comfortable ride, especially in rough seas.

Durability: Built with quality materials and craftsmanship, the Crowther 46 is known for its structural integrity and longevity.

Shallow Draft: The catamaran's shallow draft allows access to shallow waters and secluded anchorages that deeper monohulls cannot reach.

Cons

Upwind Performance: While fast overall, some sailors find that catamarans like the Crowther 46 may not point as high into the wind as comparable monohulls.

Docking and Berthing: Due to its wider beam, finding suitable marina slips can be more challenging and potentially more expensive.

Motion at Anchor: The wide beam can sometimes lead to more noticeable rolling motion when at anchor, which may affect comfort for some.

Maintenance: Twin hulls and additional rigging can mean more maintenance compared to single-hull boats.

Resale Market: Catamarans generally have a smaller resale market compared to monohulls, which might impact selling options down the line.

Made For

The 1991 Crowther 46 Catamaran is ideal for sailors and adventurers seeking a spacious, stable, and fast vessel for extended cruising. Its design caters to those who prioritize comfort and performance, making it perfect for families, liveaboards, or couples looking to explore coastal waters or take on longer offshore passages. With ample deck space and a roomy interior, it suits individuals who enjoy both socializing and privacy while sailing.
