The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 1985 Crowther 40 Trimaran is a distinctive multihull sailboat known for its performance and unique design. Here are some of the pros and cons associated with this model:

Pros

Speed and Performance: The trimaran design offers excellent speed potential and stability, making it well-suited for both cruising and racing.

Shallow Draft: With its shallow draft, the Crowther 40 can access coastal and shallow waters that many monohulls cannot.

Spacious Deck: The wide beam provides ample deck space and increased living area compared to monohull boats of similar length.

Good Stability: The three-hull configuration enhances stability, reducing heeling and making for a comfortable ride.

Durable Construction: Built with quality materials typical of Crowther designs from the mid-1980s, ensuring longevity and strength.

Cons

Handling in Tight Spaces: The wide beam can make marina docking and maneuvering in tight spaces more challenging.

Limited Interior Space: While the deck is spacious, the interior accommodations may be more compact compared to monohulls of similar length.

Maintenance: Multihulls may require more specialized maintenance, particularly for the connecting beams (akas) and crossbeams.

Availability of Parts: Given its age and unique design, sourcing replacement parts or specific components might be more difficult.

Cost: Initial purchase and upkeep can be higher compared to traditional monohull sailboats due to the complexity of the trimaran design.
