Crestliner 18: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Crestline CMV 1850, introduced for 2005, is a bass fishing boat designed in response to feedback from anglers nationwide. It offers a comprehensive suite of fishing features tailored to meet the needs of serious fishermen. As part of Crestline's Tournament Series, the CMV 1850 is a smaller yet highly capable model that balances garage-friendly size with the ability to handle large bodies of water such as the Great Lakes, providing safety and fishing functionality comparable to larger boats.

Exterior Design and Fishing Features

The CMV 1850 features a wide, stable beam and a modified V-welded aluminum hull engineered to deliver a competitive start and a solid, responsive ride. The bow casting deck is the primary fishing platform, equipped to accommodate a pedestal seat for trolling comfort. It includes a bow navigation light and a dedicated task light for night baiting, facilitating lure selection in low light conditions. Below deck, there is a motor tilt switch and a trolling motor connection socket. Ample tackle storage is provided by port and starboard lockers capable of holding multiple Plano boxes, with a central lower locker designed for the trolling motor battery. The upper center locker includes clips for navigation lights and features a locking lid to secure valuable gear. Rod storage is flexible, allowing anglers to stow as many rods as fit without dedicated organizers.

Helm and Cockpit Layout

The helm area is equipped with a removable low-profile windshield and a light to illuminate the lower cockpit at night. Convenience features include a cup holder, a combination ignition and kill switch, and a large, easy-to-read speedometer and tachometer with brushed aluminum accents. There is ample space on the dash to install additional electronic equipment, supported by a 12-volt power socket. Rocker switches, a storage grub pocket, and a tilt steering wheel complete the helm’s functional design. The cockpit comfortably seats three abreast with fold-down seats, and the center seat includes a cushioned backrest to facilitate stepping down from the stern. A rod ramp on the port side allows for rod storage during transit, and a fire extinguisher is also mounted nearby.

Stern Deck and Storage

The stern features a smaller casting deck with the option to mount a single casting chair. A starboard locker provides additional tackle storage, minimizing the need to move around the boat while fishing. Central to the stern deck is a 26-gallon livewell, flanked by storage lockers to port and starboard. Battery access is conveniently available through the rear center locker, ensuring maintenance and power management are straightforward.

Dimensions and Capacity

Measuring 18 feet 1 inch in overall length with a beam of 95 inches, the CMV 1850 has a cockpit depth of 21 inches and weighs approximately 1,300 pounds. It carries up to 41 gallons of fuel, supporting extended fishing excursions.

Power and Performance

The test model was powered by a Johnson 140-horsepower four-stroke outboard, though the boat can accommodate engines up to 150 horsepower. Performance testing revealed a top speed of 52 miles per hour at 5,400 RPM, with a fuel consumption rate of approximately 19.5 gallons per hour at wide-open throttle. At a cruising speed of 26.5 miles per hour (3,000 RPM), fuel burn was measured at 4.7 gallons per hour. The CMV 1850 demonstrated quick acceleration, achieving a hole shot in 2.8 seconds and surpassing 30 miles per hour in just over six seconds. Noise levels ranged from 81 dBA at 2,500 RPM to 93 dBA at full throttle, consistent with typical bass boat acoustics.

Conclusion

The Crestline CMV 1850 is a wood-free, aluminum-hulled bass boat that delivers a stable, responsive ride with a comprehensive array of fishing features. Its design accommodates both casual and competitive anglers seeking a versatile, safe, and efficient fishing platform that performs well on a variety of waters. Overall, the CMV 1850 offers a compelling blend of performance, functionality, and durability.
