Crest 22: BoatTEST Review

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Crest Conquest 22 SE stands out among the numerous pontoon models available, offering a blend of quality construction, performance, and affordability. As Crest's first tritoon in their SE line, this model benefits from nearly 70 years of in-house production expertise. The builder emphasizes durability by backing the boat with a lifetime warranty on the structure and a 10-year limited warranty on components. Designed to deliver a quality pontoon experience without the premium price tag, the Conquest 22 SE also focuses on delivering strong on-water performance.

Construction Quality and Exterior Features

The Conquest 22 SE incorporates several thoughtful construction details that enhance durability and performance. Its pontoons feature full-length lifting strakes, which are critical for achieving planing and improving ride quality. The placement of the pontoons results from extensive computer modeling and testing to optimize performance and comfort. The nose cones include spray fins and an M bracket extending the entire length, providing important structural reinforcement. Crest employs a Welded Extruded Box Beam (WEBB) chassis beneath the deck, offering increased structural rigidity and torsional strength. These box beams extend to the edges of the deck trim to protect against impacts when docking. An aluminum skin runs underneath the deck along the full length of the boat, further reinforcing the structure. The rigging is well protected behind aluminum sheathing at the transom, ensuring clean and secure installation. The fencing is constructed from a single-piece frame that is bent and notched for smooth, elegant corners, and doors utilize nearly full-length piano hinges with gasket butyl material to prevent rattling. The bimini top is built with robust square tubing and features a proprietary in-house powder coat for enhanced durability, secured with locking stainless steel fasteners.

Interior Living Spaces and Amenities

The deck is constructed from three-quarter-inch marine plywood topped with a woven flooring material that is both high quality and easy to clean. Seating frames are made from aluminum, providing strength and ample storage space beneath. Speaker wiring is neatly routed under the deck and protected by the aluminum skin. The seats are well-padded with dual-density foam covered in soft-touch, two-tone vinyl upholstery, including embroidered Crest logos for a refined appearance. The seating arrangement includes split seats for easier access to storage without disturbing guests, and three layback loungers with comfortable backrests and generous foam padding. Additional storage is available near the midship boarding gate, featuring a gas-strut lid that can be optionally fitted with a privacy curtain for changing. The aft deck offers ample space for water sports activities, including an optional tow bar, a sturdy swim ladder, and an aft-facing seat with more storage underneath.

Helm and Controls

The helm console is a single-piece fiberglass unit equipped with an optional Eagle 5 Lowrance GPS system, which is useful for navigation in larger waterways. Instrumentation includes a GPS-controlled speedometer, trim and fuel indicators, and an RPM gauge displaying engine hours. The helm features a Bluetooth Fusion audio head unit with a small storage cubby, push-button controls, and both USB-A and USB-C charging ports. The steering system is a Dometic XPA electric setup, providing smooth, responsive handling that is easier to operate than traditional hydraulic steering. The helm seat is comfortable with adjustable armrests and fore-aft movement; it also swivels and reclines to engage with guests in the conversation zone.

Power and Performance

The test boat measures 23 feet 5 inches in length overall with an 8-foot 6-inch beam and a test weight of approximately 3,220 pounds, including fuel and two passengers. It is powered by a single 150 horsepower Suzuki outboard paired with a 15.5 by 19-inch WaterGrip propeller. The gear ratio of 2.5:1 provides greater torque, enhancing performance under load. During testing, the boat reached a top speed of 39 miles per hour at 6,000 RPM, which is ample power for typical pontoon boating scenarios. The electric steering system contributes to a sporty, agile feel, allowing quick and confident maneuvers, especially useful when docking.

Conclusion

The Crest Conquest 22 SE exemplifies a well-engineered pontoon boat that balances quality construction, thoughtful design, and strong performance at a competitive price point. Its structural integrity, attention to detail, and comfortable amenities make it suitable for extended cruising and family outings. The boat’s smooth handling and respectable speed, combined with durable materials and smart storage solutions, reflect Crest’s commitment to delivering a reliable and enjoyable boating experience.
