This design was developed in the 1960's by renowned Naval Architect Charles Wittholz. This compact trawler/tug proved to be well-received, and a number of them (7-8) were built in various small, custom yards in and around the Chesapeake Bay area. All of the original boats were built as traditional wooden boats (plank-on-frame construction). The single chine hull was found to be very efficient and sea-kindly, topping out at over 9 knots with only a 65 hp diesel. Since it is our belief that attractive, proven designs are timeless, this 32 footer was reintroduced with a touch of modern technology. The "new generation" Chinook 32 is of cold-molded construction utilizing the latest in marine ply and epoxy products. She retains her "wooden boat ride" while having the ease of maintenance of a fiberglass boat. She's powered by a Kubota-based 130 hp turbo diesel (in-line 4 cylinder) which yields a cruise speed of 10 knots and top of about 12. Her single chine, semi-displacement hull provides a comfortable ride without the excessive roll of many round-hulled trawlers. Her layout includes a private stateroom forward with enclosed head and integrated shower, raised pilothouse, main salon aft with convertible settee/dinette, and galley.
