Boattest.com Review

Overview

The Chaparral 280 OSX Outboard is a newly introduced, NMMA-certified production hull in Chaparral's OSX Outboard sports line. Designed to combine style, comfort, and performance, the 280 OSX features innovative seating arrangements, a spacious head, and twin Yamaha outboard engines. This review covers a comprehensive features inspection and performance evaluation conducted by BowTest.com.

Power and Performance

Two versions of the 280 OSX were tested: one equipped with twin Yamaha 250 four-stroke F-250 XCA engines and the other with twin Yamaha 200 four-stroke F-200 XCA engines. The 250-powered version, with Saltwater Series II stainless steel props measuring 15.25 inches in diameter and 19 inches in pitch, achieved a top speed of 59.5 miles per hour at 6,000 RPM. Its best economic cruise was at 3,000 RPM, producing 28 miles per hour with a fuel consumption of 13.6 gallons per hour, translating to 2.1 miles per gallon and a range of 222 statute miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve from the 120-gallon capacity. The slow cruise at 600 RPM yielded 4 miles per hour with a 1.3 gallon per hour burn. The 200-powered version, turning 18-inch pitch stainless steel Reliance props, reached a top speed of 51.5 miles per hour at 6,000 RPM. Its best economic cruise was at 3,500 RPM with 26.5 miles per hour and a fuel burn of 12 gallons per hour, resulting in 2.2 miles per gallon and a range of 239 statute miles. Slow cruise at 600 RPM gave 3 miles per hour with 0.8 gallons per hour consumption. Both versions exhibited minimal bow rise when planing, benefiting from a 21-degree dead rise hull that handled light waves smoothly without hull slap. Acceleration times for the 250s were 5.5 seconds to 20 mph and 7.7 seconds to 30 mph, while the 200s took 6.6 seconds and 9.7 seconds respectively.

Helm and Controls

The helm is positioned to starboard on a tilt base, featuring a hand-stitched steering wheel centrally located. Twin 7-inch Garmin displays flank the Yamaha engine display, though a compass is notably absent. To the right is the Optimus 360 joystick, providing full maneuverability at the dock, accompanied by engine start keys, safety lanyard, and Lenco trim tab controls. An Optimus 360 joystick monitor displays thrust and movement data when engaged. Accessory switches are split between the right and port sides of the helm. Additional amenities include a cubby with audio and USB inputs, a 12-volt plug, and Clarion audio controls to the left of the wheel. The engine control binnacles are ergonomically placed on the starboard side, set at a 30-degree angle. Courtesy lighting is installed just aft of the helm, and six JL audio speakers are distributed throughout the helm and cockpit area, including a subwoofer integrated into the aft cockpit seating. The helm seating is a two-seat bench that swivels to starboard, transforming the cockpit layout easily with a simple pull and twist mechanism. Stainless steel grab handles are mounted on the back of the seats. The windscreen spans 7 feet 3 inches wide and 2 feet 5 inches high, providing good visibility with 8 inches from helm to windshield top and 2 feet 2 inches from windshield top to hardtop.

Exterior Features and Deck Layout

The bow area is a standout feature, accessed via a 1 foot 7 inch port side walkway and surrounded by 9 inch by 2.5 inch bolsters that rise 2 feet 8 inches from deck to bolster top, creating a safe and spacious environment. The bow seating converts into a sun pad using Chaparral's innovative center seat, and can be easily reverted back to conventional seating. A dinette table, integrated speakers, and drink holders enhance comfort. The bow anchor locker houses an electric Lumar windlass with local and helm controls, a manual hand wrench, and a 14-pound galvanized DTX plow anchor. Two 6-inch pull-up mooring cleats are positioned port and starboard. The swim platform is generous for a 28-foot boat, measuring 8.5 feet long by 2 feet 10 inches wide on either side, with an 11-inch center transition platform, all covered with C-deck material. A heavy-duty dive door with a magnetic catch and push-button lock provides secure access to the platform, complemented by a washdown hose. Cleats and fuel fills are conveniently located near the platform, and battery and holding tank access is integrated into the starboard side seating. A partition door separates the cockpit from the swim platform, behind which the main breaker panel and battery shutoffs are located.

Mechanical and Systems Access

The mechanical compartment is situated beneath the aft center seating section, secured by heavy-duty brackets and a break system for easy access. Inside, the fuel tank, fuel lines, and digital fuel sending units are centrally located. House and engine batteries are positioned to port, with the black water holding tank to starboard. A 20-amp battery charger is mounted above the batteries. Engine fuel water separators flank the compartment, and the bilge pump with low and high-level float switches is centrally placed. Hydraulic steering pumps for both engines are mounted aft, with the Optimus 360 joystick steering unit between them. The through-hull transducer is located beneath the starboard fuel water separator. The entire compartment is bonded to prevent galvanic corrosion and illuminated by LED lighting.

Interior Living Spaces and Head

The 280 OSX includes a spacious head accessed via a door to the port side of the helm. The headroom measures 4 feet 9 inches, with seated headroom at 3 feet 3 inches. The head features a sink integrated into the countertop and an opening port on the starboard side for ventilation. An electric head slides out on a track and is concealed beneath the door when not in use. Lighting and flush controls are mounted on the aft bulkhead, providing convenience and privacy.

Cockpit and Seating

The cockpit features an L-shaped seating arrangement to port, with wrap-around bolsters continuing throughout the area for comfort and safety. The aft seating includes a convertible sun pad that easily transforms into an aft-facing lounge. Under the port bench seating, storage is provided for a 25-quart removable cooler and an inflator/deflator for water toys or floats, along with the dinette table. Multiple JL audio speakers are strategically placed around the cockpit, enhancing the entertainment experience. The hardtop offers substantial sun protection, featuring a bonded 3.5 by 2-foot skylight equipped with a blind system that transitions from transparent to opaque. Recessed lighting is installed at both ends of the hardtop, and the structure follows the contours of the windscreen on both sides, contributing to the boat's strong and cohesive design.

Conclusion

The Chaparral 280 OSX Outboard presents a compelling combination of performance, comfort, and innovative design features for a 28-foot sport boat. Its twin Yamaha outboard options provide strong acceleration and efficient cruising capabilities, while the convertible seating arrangements in the helm, bow, and aft cockpit maximize usable space and versatility. The inclusion of a roomy head, extensive storage, a protective hardtop with advanced skylight features, and a well-designed swim platform with dive door further enhance its appeal. Overall, the 280 OSX is a well-rounded vessel suitable for extended day outings with family and friends, delivering style, safety, and enjoyable boating experiences.
