Chaparral 26: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Chaparral 257 SSX Outboard is a newly NMMA certified luxury bow rider measuring 25 feet 6 inches in length overall. This model represents the builder's latest offering in the 25-foot category, combining premium materials such as stainless steel with thoughtful design details. It is designed to provide a family-friendly boating experience with a versatile layout and modern features.

Exterior Design and Deck Features

The exterior of the 257 SSX is distinguished by extensive stainless steel accents and diamond-pattern non-skid decking throughout the bow area. The bow offers a spacious seating arrangement with deep lounges, flip-up armrests, and stainless steel bow rails and grab handles for safety. The forward anchor locker houses a polished stainless steel plow anchor controlled by an optional Lumar windlass, with a manual hand wrench and tie-off cleat nearby. A boarding ladder is standard when the premium windlass package is not installed. The aft bench seating lifts via gas-assist struts to reveal storage compartments, with a self-locking strut on the starboard side to ensure safe and controlled closure. The swim platform spans 8 feet 1 inch in width and includes a fresh water shower, pump-out connection for the head, and a reboarding ladder concealed behind a starboard hatch. The cockpit features snap-in SeaDek flooring and a self-bailing drainage system, enhancing both comfort and safety.

Helm and Cockpit Layout

The helm station is positioned to starboard and includes a tilt-mounted steering wheel with power steering. The single-engine throttle lever integrates trim controls, while lighting switches are arranged in a centralized 'L' configuration on both sides of the helm. Twin 7-inch touchscreen displays provide moving maps and full digital engine monitoring, angled for optimal operator visibility. Below the dash are water-resistant push-button DC breakers, and console storage is accessible via a side door. Seating at the helm and observer positions features flip-up bolsters, open backs for ventilation, fully adjustable levers, and integrated grab rails. The cockpit seating includes a bench behind the helm, an L-shaped lounge to starboard, and a convertible aft bench that transforms into a sun pad. Storage is abundant, including a dedicated cooler compartment and a built-in ski locker between the helm chairs. An optional EFX tower with JL audio speakers enhances both aesthetics and functionality, lowering bridge clearance when needed.

Interior Living Spaces and Amenities

The bow area is separated from the cockpit by an air dam and windshield doors, creating a defined space. The port side console houses a head compartment equipped with a premium electric head, solid surface countertop, pressure water sink, and vanity mirror. Electric controls for the head are mounted conveniently on the bulkhead. Storage solutions include a lockable glove box with a slip-resistant mat and stainless steel trim. Courtesy lighting and JL audio speakers are integrated throughout the seating areas, contributing to a comfortable and enjoyable onboard environment.

Power and Performance

Powered by a single Yamaha 300 horsepower V6 4.2-liter four-stroke outboard engine, the 257 SSX turns a saltwater series 2 stainless steel propeller measuring 15.5 inches in diameter with an 18-inch pitch. The vessel has a beam of 8 feet 6 inches and a draft of 2 feet 9 inches, with an empty weight of 5,040 pounds. Test conditions included 50% fuel and two people aboard, resulting in an estimated test weight of 5,512 pounds. Performance testing showed a top speed of 52 miles per hour at 6,000 RPM. The most efficient cruising speed was 26.1 miles per hour at 3,500 RPM, yielding a fuel consumption of 9.1 gallons per hour and a range of approximately 168 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve from the 65-gallon capacity. In no-wake mode at 600 RPM, the boat achieved 3.6 miles per hour with a 6 gallons per hour fuel burn. Acceleration metrics included 0 to 20 miles per hour in 6.9 seconds, 30 miles per hour in 9.4 seconds, and 40 miles per hour in 13.2 seconds. Handling was responsive and stable across all speeds, with minimal trim adjustments required and excellent performance in light chop and breeze conditions.

Conclusion

The Chaparral 257 SSX Outboard presents a compelling option in the luxury bow rider segment, combining a versatile and well-thought-out layout with premium materials and modern technology. Its performance is strong and efficient, supported by a reliable Yamaha outboard powerplant. The boat’s extensive storage, comfortable seating configurations, and thoughtful safety features make it well suited for family outings and recreational boating. Overall, the 257 SSX outboard is a refined and capable vessel that meets the market demand for a 25-foot luxury bow rider with outboard propulsion.
