The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 2004 Catalina 387 Wing Keel is a popular cruising sailboat known for its balance of performance, comfort, and ease of handling. Here are some of the pros and cons associated with this model:

Pros

Shallow Draft: The wing keel design allows for a shallower draft (around 4.5 feet), enabling access to shallower waters and more diverse cruising grounds compared to deeper keel boats.

Spacious Interior: The Catalina 387 offers a roomy and well-laid-out interior with comfortable accommodations, including ample headroom, a well-equipped galley, and multiple cabins suitable for extended cruising.

Good Performance: Despite the wing keel, the boat maintains respectable sailing performance, with balanced handling and stable tracking, making it enjoyable for both coastal and offshore sailing.

Solid Construction: Catalina Yachts are known for their durable fiberglass construction, providing reliability and ease of maintenance.

Easy to Handle: The sail plan and deck layout are designed for short-handed sailing, featuring user-friendly controls and a manageable rig.

Cons

Wing Keel Performance Trade-offs: While the wing keel offers shallow draft benefits, it may result in slightly reduced upwind performance compared to a deeper fin keel, especially in lighter winds.

Weight: The boat is relatively heavy, which can impact acceleration and responsiveness under sail.

Interior Finish: Some owners feel that the interior finish, while functional, is more utilitarian and less luxurious compared to other boats in its class.

Limited Load Capacity: The wing keel design may limit the amount of additional gear and provisions the boat can carry without affecting performance.

Market Availability: As a model from 2004, finding one in excellent condition may require careful inspection and possible upgrades or maintenance.
