To demonstrate the strength of this composite material, they conducted rigorous tests, including shooting bullets from various firearms at a sample laid-up for strength testing. This bulletproof sample remains in existence today. The company was initially named Yacht Constructors, and their first project was building the 34' sloop "Vigilant," designed by Frederick Geiger of Yacht Sales & Service in Philadelphia, PA. In 1955, a contract was formed to distribute hours and labor among five boats. The group created a wooden plug based on the "Vigilant" design, followed by completing a fiberglass mold by early September. Hull No. 1 was reinforced with steel bars in the keel area, and interior work progressed steadily. They named this new class of hull "CHINOOK." On April 21, 1956, Hull No. 1 was launched, showcasing its robustness through extensive sailing that summer, while Hulls No. 2 and No. 3 were under construction. Hull No. 2 was launched on November 3rd, surviving a 15-foot drop during the launch without damage, proving the strength of the hull material and construction process. By 1957, Hulls No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 were launched, garnering attention within the yachting community due to their performance in races. An article and pictures sent by Larry Barber of the Oregonian to “Yachting” magazine resulted in significant inquiries. Hull No. 6 was sold to Dr. Don Laird. At this juncture, Jarvis Gould and Henry Morton exited the group, but Tom Green, Merle Starr, and Wade Cornwell continued working evenings and weekends. With the sale of Hulls No. 7, 8, and 9 in 1958, expansion became necessary. The group rented a metal building at 7110 NE 42nd Ave. and hired additional manpower. Subsequently, “Yacht Constructors, Inc.” was incorporated in 1960, completing and selling Hull No. 15. In 1961, the members felt a new design would enhance the performance of fiberglass hulls. Robert A. Smith of Portland, formerly of Sparkman & Stephens, designed the “CASCADE 29” hull. By the end of 1963, Yacht Constructors, Inc. had produced 48 CASCADE 29’s and 34 CHINOOK 34’s. In 1964, the company constructed its own building at 7030 NE 42nd Ave. in Portland and completed the design for the CASCADE 42, selling Hull No. 1 to Dr. Don Laird. 1967 saw the introduction of the CASCADE 36, designed by Mr. Smith, with the first hull sold to Mike Godsil. Recognizing the quality of their hand lay-up method, their brochure emphasized the superiority of fiberglass woven roving and cloth compared to mat and chopper guns, which added weight and brittleness to the laminate. In 1978, Mr. Smith designed the CASCADE 27, receiving Hull No. 1 of that series. Despite Merle Starr’s passing in 1987, Wade Cornwell and Tom Green continued operations. The CASCADE 42 mold was modified to widen the beam and heighten the sides, leading to the designation CASCADE 42 HS. Hans and Irene Geerling acquired the company's assets in 1989, rebranding it Cascade Yachts, Inc. They expanded services to include brokerage for used boats, rented spaces for boat finishing or refinishing, and acquired several molds from Heritage Boats of Hood River, OR, creating interest in models like the Cascade Classic 39 and Mini-Tug 20 variants. Throughout the 1990s, the company introduced the 36’ Trawler featuring two keels and dual engines, ensuring low operational costs and enhanced safety. Tom Green passed away in 1998, yet Wade Cornwell remained active in the office. The Nor'easter 26 emerged from the production line, culminating in its debut at the Portland boat show in 2001. In 2003, they completed the C39 Pilothouse, further diversifying their offerings. Cascade Yachts also fabricated airplane parts, performed rigging, repairs, and dealer services for marine accessories brands such as Yanmar, Vetus, and Beta. In 2007, Russell and Mark Mead purchased Cascade’s assets, relocating operations to Warrenton, OR, and redesigned the 36' trawler, naming it the CT 36. The construction transitioned to exclusively utilizing epoxy resins. This history highlights Cascade's enduring innovation and commitment to producing high-quality yachts recognized worldwide.
