Caravelle Interceptor: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Caravelle 232 Interceptor is a 23-foot performance boat that combines striking aesthetics with impressive handling and speed capabilities. Designed with an emphasis on both style and function, it features an optional through-hole exhaust system that delivers a distinctive sound experience. The boat’s hull incorporates Caravelle’s XP V-Haul technology, which enhances power utilization, allowing for quicker planing, stable low-speed handling, and strong top-end performance.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The 232 Interceptor’s exterior is thoughtfully designed for both comfort and utility. At the bow, a large pop-up cleat facilitates easy docking, while bow rails are mounted nearly horizontally to keep gauntlet tops clear. Seating arrangements include loungers on both the companion and helm sides, which can be converted into a sun pad with filler cushions, providing an ideal spot for sunbathing. Underneath the cushions, storage compartments and drainable lockers double as coolers, enhancing day-use convenience. The stern features a full-length sun pad with an optional walk-through transom and filler cushion, complemented by wraparound aft seating. Storage is ample throughout, including generously sized lockers beneath seats and adjacent to the engine compartment, which also serve practical purposes such as drying lifejackets and storing canvas covers. The boat includes a small integrated swim platform with an optional bolt-on extension and a concealed telescoping swim ladder for easy water access. Additionally, a Kenwood remote commander mounted near the walk-through allows for stereo control from the water.

Interior and Helm Features

Access to the cockpit is gained through a walk-through windshield, which in this model is an optional black sport windshield. The upgraded stereo system’s subwoofer is integrated into the sidewall of the walk-through area. The helm features soft-tech spring cushion bucket seats that absorb shocks effectively, enhancing ride comfort in rough conditions. The companion side includes a slash storage pocket with speakers and an auxiliary input for personal audio devices. The helm console is equipped with a tilt-padded steering wheel and a color-coordinated dash, featuring lighted rocker switches and Fria gauges with color bezels, including a digital depth gauge. The boat’s zero-effort controls provide intuitive handling, although they may require some familiarization for those accustomed to standard throttle shifters. Additional amenities include stainless steel drink holders, a glove box, and a grab bar for convenience and safety.

Power and Performance

Powered by a Volvo 5.7 GXI engine producing 320 horsepower, the 232 Interceptor delivers robust performance with a maximum engine rating of 375 horsepower from either Volvo or Mercruiser. The hull’s XP V-Haul design contributes to efficient power transfer and handling. During testing in challenging sea conditions, the boat demonstrated precise handling and smooth navigation through heavy chop. It planes at approximately 3,000 RPM, achieving a speed of 35.9 mph, and offers a full-tank range of 121 miles. The top speed recorded was 58.6 mph at 5,000 RPM, with potential for higher speeds in calmer waters. Acceleration is notable, with the boat reaching plane in 3.2 seconds and 30 mph in 6.2 seconds, underscoring its quick responsiveness and agility.

Dimensions and Capacity

The Caravelle 232 Interceptor measures 23 feet in overall length with a beam width of 8 feet 4 inches. It carries a fuel capacity of 36 gallons, balancing size and range for day cruising and performance boating.

Conclusion

The Caravelle 232 Interceptor stands out as a well-designed, high-performance boat that offers both style and substance. Its innovative hull design, comfortable and versatile seating arrangements, and advanced helm features make it suitable for a variety of recreational boating activities. With strong acceleration, impressive top-end speed, and excellent handling even in rough waters, it appeals to those seeking a dynamic and enjoyable boating experience.
