The 28 Cape Dory is a graceful Down East style cruiser with a lobster boat profile. She is built on an easy riding semi-displacement hull with a moderate beam, round bilges, large rudder, and keel for easy handling. Additional features include: wide side decks; good service access to the engine, enclosed stand-up head and large cockpit.
Cape Dory Yachts, a Massachusetts-based builder of fiberglass sailboats, powerboats and pleasure trawlers, operated from 1963 - 1992. By the 1980s, Cape Dory had built hundreds of sailboats, many of which were designed by the Swedish maritime architect Carl Alberg who was known for simple lines, a narrow beam and a full keel for seaworthy sailing. When the company decided to build a powerboat, Alberg's philosophy carried through to an uncomplicated, capable, sturdy cruiser with traditional lines. The Cape Dory 28 debuted in 1984. During its decade-long production run, she set a standard for the fleet of salty Downeast-style cruisers.
