Here is what Andrew Burton had to say about the C&C 40 in a December 2017  article in Cruising World:

"... The sport has changed, but many of the wonderful true racer/cruisers of the '70's and 80s remain. The boats built by C&C Yachts in Canada are some of the best of that breed....With a beautiful spring to her sheer, rakish stem, reverse transom and rounded cabin house that gently tapers into the fore-deck, the C&C 40 looks fast just sitting on her mooring."

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 1981 C&C 40-2 Centerboard is a versatile and well-regarded sailboat, offering a blend of performance and cruising comfort. Here are some of the key pros and cons to consider:

Pros

Versatile Draft: The centerboard design allows for adjustable draft, providing the ability to sail in shallow waters with the board up and improved upwind performance with the board down.

Performance-Oriented: True to C&C’s reputation, the 40-2 offers good sailing performance with a balanced sail plan and efficient hull design, making it enjoyable for both racing and cruising.

Solid Construction: Built with quality materials and craftsmanship typical of C&C yachts, ensuring durability and longevity.

Spacious Interior: For a 40-foot boat, the interior layout is comfortable and functional, suitable for extended cruising with ample storage and living space.

Good Resale Value: Due to its reputation and build quality, the C&C 40-2 tends to hold its value well in the used boat market.

Cons

Maintenance Requirements: Like many boats from the early 1980s, ongoing maintenance and occasional upgrades may be necessary to keep systems and finishes in top shape.

Centerboard Mechanism: The centerboard system can require regular inspection and maintenance to ensure smooth operation and prevent issues such as corrosion or jamming.

Older Design Features: While performance is strong, some aspects of the design and onboard systems may feel dated compared to modern sailboats, potentially requiring modernization.

Limited Headroom: Although spacious, the cabin headroom might be somewhat limited for taller individuals, which could affect comfort during extended stays aboard.

Weight: The solid construction comes with a moderate displacement, which may result in a less lively feel in light wind conditions compared to lighter, more modern designs.
