Boattest.com Review
Overview
The Boston Whaler 380 Outrage is the latest iteration in the Outrage line, replacing the highly successful 370 Outrage. This 38-foot vessel features a refreshed design with numerous enhancements both on deck and below, including a newly developed hull and updated appointments that align it with the rest of the Outrage series. With a beam of 11 feet 8 inches and a draft of 23.5 inches, the boat weighs approximately 14,500 pounds empty. Our test configuration, including fuel, crew, and nearly a ton of optional equipment such as the tower and SeaKeeper gyro stabilizer, brought the total test weight to just over 20,000 pounds.
Power and Performance
The 380 Outrage was tested with two engine configurations. First, a triple Mercury 350 Verado setup with 16 by 17 inertia eco props achieved a top speed of 50 miles per hour at 6,200 RPM. The optimal cruise speed was 29.3 miles per hour at 4,000 RPM, consuming 32.7 gallons per hour, which equated to approximately 0.9 miles per gallon and a range of 359 miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve. The newer quad engine option, available with either 350 or 400 horsepower Verados, was also tested with quad 400 Verados turning 18 pitch props. This configuration reached a top speed of 57.8 miles per hour and cruised best at 32.9 miles per hour with a fuel burn of 42.4 gallons per hour, yielding about 0.8 miles per gallon and a 312-mile range with a 10% reserve. Acceleration was brisk, with planing achieved in 3.8 seconds, 20 miles per hour in 5.4 seconds, and 30 miles per hour in 7.5 seconds. The hull, designed from a clean slate with a 23-degree dead rise, demonstrated responsive and well-mannered handling in calm waters and impressive offshore performance in 8 to 10-foot rollers and 30 to 35 knot winds. The boat exhibited solid, predictable behavior with minimized spray and excellent nose control thanks to an automatic dynamic trim tab system.
Exterior Design and Bridge
The 380 Outrage features an aggressively styled, angular console offset to starboard with the helm station centered within a three-sided tempered glass enclosure. The dashboard is finished in tan with soft-touch vinyl and houses dual 165GS screens, rocker switches, and controls for the SeaKeeper gyro, active trim, and Mercury's Vessel View system. The helm includes a stainless steel wheel with a steering knob, tilt base, digital throttle and shift controls, and Mercury's Joystick Piloting for Outboards system with advanced autopilot and positioning features. Seating at the helm consists of three individual seats with armrests and bolsters, including an electrically adjustable captain's chair and a flip-down footrest for the portside observer. Overhead storage for the full weather enclosure is integrated above the helm area, which enjoys 6 feet 8 inches of headroom. The hardtop and tower supports are built into the console to preserve side deck space. Access to the tower is via stairs and a sliding hatch to port, with a secondary helm station featuring navigation displays, engine controls, joystick piloting, and a double-wide seat with storage beneath. The foredeck includes a concealed Lumar windlass, anchor mounted through the stem, and diamond non-skid surfaces with integrated cleats and rod holders. The cockpit offers 45 square feet of fishing space, large refrigerated and macerated fish boxes, spreader and courtesy lighting, remote camera, and numerous rod holders. The deck is designed with a slight cant to channel water efficiently to twin drains, and an automatic engine flush system simplifies maintenance.
Interior Living Spaces
The cabin entry has been relocated to the starboard console side, allowing for full weather enclosure access and improved protection. Inside, the cabin offers 6 feet 5 inches of headroom beneath a skylight. The galley area includes a microwave concealed behind a retractable door, a Corian countertop with a recessed vessel sink, and an opening port light. Thoughtful storage solutions abound, including climate-controlled rod storage relocated beneath the cabin floor, overhead cabinets, and shelving. The seating area converts into a double berth, and the seat backs feature rubberized surfaces to prevent storage items from sliding. The fully enclosed head is a significant upgrade, equipped with a flip-down teak seat, pull-out shower wand, opening port light, mirror, and flip-down foul weather gear hooks, complemented by heat and air conditioning vents for comfort and drying.
Private Accommodations and Bow Area
The redesigned bow area is spacious and comfortable, with bulwarks drawn outward to provide generous seating without crowding. The seats are arranged facing each other with 7 feet 8 inches of separation, and seat bases flip up to form backrests with bolstered armrests and recessed grab rails. A teak table with adjustable height and a padded top converts the area into a sun pad. Behind the bow seating is a large double-wide lounge with armrests and a flip-down center armrest featuring beverage holders, a self-draining cell phone cubby, and connectivity ports. Storage is significantly improved with a large deck compartment capable of holding multiple five-gallon buckets and a V-seat storage area accessible by a single remote latch. Rod storage has been moved below deck to a climate-controlled environment, freeing up space for gear and tanks. The bow area is designed as a luxurious and functional gathering space with amenities reflecting customer feedback.
Additional Features and Amenities
The 380 Outrage includes numerous practical and comfort-oriented features. The cockpit has an aft-facing seat with storage that converts into a buffet table with a teak surface, complemented by a flip-out transom seat and additional flip-down seating along the starboard bulkhead. Cockpit tables are available with cleverly designed pivoting brackets for easy storage and deployment. An electrically actuated retractable awning provides shade over the cockpit. The boat's side decks measure 20 inches wide with 36-inch high rails, integrated speakers, cargo net storage, and flip-down jump seats. The dive door on the port bulwark opens inward, allowing easy boarding from a floating dock, and includes a nearby reboarding ladder and grab handle. The mechanical room is accessed via a cockpit deck hatch and houses all major systems, including batteries, fire suppression, pumps, power steering, fuel filters, air conditioning, the generator, and the SeaKeeper gyro pump, all organized for ease of maintenance.
Conclusion
The Boston Whaler 380 Outrage represents a comprehensive update to a proven platform, combining a new hull design, advanced powertrain options, and a wealth of thoughtful features aimed at both anglers and families. Its offshore handling is impressive, delivering a smooth, predictable ride even in challenging conditions. The integration of modern technology such as Mercury's cruise assist and joystick piloting systems, along with the SeaKeeper gyro stabilizer, enhances both performance and comfort. Interior and exterior spaces are carefully designed to maximize utility, storage, and comfort, making the 380 Outrage a versatile and capable vessel in its class.
