Boston Whaler 380 Realm: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Boston Whaler 380 Realm is an expedition-grade yacht designed to excel in offshore conditions while providing ample social and entertainment spaces throughout its 38-foot length. This model represents Boston Whaler's first offering with optional fishing features, although its primary focus is on comfort and versatility for both cruising and entertaining.

Exterior Design and Social Zones

The 380 Realm features a spacious 45-square-foot aft cockpit that serves as the primary social area, equipped with easy access points including steps to starboard and an inward-opening hull side door to port. A reboarding ladder and flip grab handle are conveniently located near the side door, enhancing usability for diving activities. The transom bench seat can be pulled out for relaxation, complemented by additional forward seating with flip footrests. Underneath the seating is a 260-quart insulated ice chest accessible via lifting the seat or through a transparent door. Two pedestal tables stored beneath the deck hatch can be deployed for dining or socializing. An extended awning provides sun protection, and flipping the seat back creates forward-facing seating ideal for enjoying the ride. The helm seat reverses to form another social zone, complete with flip footrests and the option to relocate one of the pedestal tables for added functionality. The hardtop includes innovative features such as an optional sunroof and paddleboard racks, unique to this model.

Galley and Summer Kitchen

Opposite the helm is the summer kitchen, which incorporates a section of Corian countertop that lifts and swivels to reveal an electric grill while maintaining a prep area. A removable lid covers the sink, which stores conveniently underneath when not in use. Beverage holders and a trash receptacle are integrated into the design, alongside a pull-out refrigerated drawer and additional storage compartments. There is even designated storage for a five-gallon bucket. The observer seat adjacent to the summer kitchen includes a flip footrest, bolster, and armrests, and swivels to join the social area, enhancing the communal atmosphere.

Bow Social Area and Shade Options

The bow features storage bins along the outboard bulwarks and a cleverly designed door with a gas-strut-assisted window that creates an air block. The forward social zone consists of wraparound seating with bolsters surrounding a finely finished table with inlay work. The aft seats include flip armrests with beverage holders, and storage is available beneath the seats. The table can be lowered and combined with a filler cushion to form a full sun pad. Additionally, a quickly assembled bow sunshade offers protection from the sun. A 70-quart cooler with a gas-strut-supported hatch is also provided for convenience.

Interior Living Spaces

Inside the cabin, forward V-shaped seating surrounds a high-low table that converts into a berth, with the table sliding to facilitate easy entry and exit. The starboard bulkhead houses various storage solutions. Near the entrance, a sink and refrigerator are installed with ample surrounding storage. The cabin is equipped with modern technology, allowing control of onboard systems via an iPad, including access to home screens. A 24-inch television is mounted above the berth, and a skylight admits natural light. The wet head is located just beneath the cabin area and features a separate shower wand rather than a pull-out sink faucet. A full-length mirror is positioned inside the door for added convenience.

Fishing Features and Cockpit Equipment

For fishing enthusiasts, the 380 Realm offers transom-mounted rod holders and both fresh and raw water washdowns integrated into the aft bulwarks. The design includes trays for excess dock lines that also function as tow rails. The boat can be pre-rigged for electric reels, and insulated, chilled fish boxes are located on both sides of the cockpit. Stern cleats are recessed under the gunwales and accessed through hawse holes in the cap rail. Shore power connectivity is positioned on the starboard side of the cockpit.

Mechanical Systems and Engine Room

Beneath the cockpit deck lies a well-organized mechanical room housing a 10-kW diesel generator, macerator pumps for the port in-deck fish box and starboard fish box, blackwater pump with closed-through hull discharge, diesel filter and fuel pump for the generator, two 40-amp battery chargers, battery distribution panels and relays, multiple batteries, a blackwater holding tank, a Seakeeper gyro stabilizer, power steering pumps, fire suppression system, air conditioning and refrigeration pumps, and the generator muffler. The layout ensures all components are electrically bonded and centralized for ease of access. Main electrical panels are mounted on an overhead bulkhead, segregating 12-volt and 120-volt systems.

Helm and Navigation Systems

The helm station is designed with functionality and aesthetics in mind, featuring triple 16-inch Raymarine displays forming a glass dash. Electrical switches flank both sides, with climate control vents above supplemented by an electrically actuated window vent. Control of all systems is possible through the touchscreen displays. Below the screens, a Fusion stereo system with optional Sirius XM is installed. To the right, a 9-inch Mercury Vessel View display provides features such as cruise assist speed control, bow hook, sky hook, and drift hook. The digital throttle and shift controls are located on a console extension, alongside the Mercury joystick piloting system. The breaker panel is conveniently positioned next to the helm for quick access.

Performance and Handling

Powered by quad Mercury 350-horsepower engines with joystick piloting, the test boat demonstrated impressive performance in two-foot seas, achieving a top speed of 53.5 miles per hour. Boston Whaler's internal testing recorded a maximum speed of 56.8 miles per hour. The most economical cruise was at 4,000 RPM, corresponding to 34.8 miles per hour with a fuel consumption of 45.12 gallons per hour, yielding approximately 0.8 miles per gallon and a range of 309 statute miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve from the total 445-gallon capacity. The boat planes in 5.7 seconds, accelerates to 20 mph in 6.2 seconds, and reaches 30 mph in 10.4 seconds. Handling characteristics are exemplary, with the hull smoothly skipping over waves, maintaining a dry and even keel ride, and effectively minimizing spray. The boat performs well in beam and following seas, with no bow stuffing or speed restrictions, reflecting thoughtful design both above and below the waterline.

Conclusion

The Boston Whaler 380 Realm is a versatile and well-engineered yacht that balances offshore capability with social and entertainment amenities. Its multiple independent social zones, advanced mechanical systems, and strong performance make it suitable for extended cruising and recreational use. The thoughtful integration of fishing features as options adds to its appeal without compromising its primary focus on comfort and style. Overall, the 380 Realm represents a comprehensive package for those seeking a reliable, comfortable, and sporty offshore vessel.
