There are a lot of advantages with strapping on multiple outboards on larger boats in lieu of inboards or stern-drives. However, close in maneuvering is not one of them. Many manufacturers have resorted to standard bow thrusters to compensate for the lack of low speed steerage that closely spaced outboards produce. At FLIBS, Boston Whaler introduced a 350 Outrage with Mercury's Joystick Piloting that allows the operator to maneuver in tight situations with the ease of a joystick, removing the stress of docking.
The Boston Whaler 350 Outrage with Mercury's Joystick Piloting takes even more stress away with its station holding capability. The Joystick Piloting autopilot and GPS keep the vessel in position and maintaining heading so the operator can manage holding for bridges or when fishing over structure offshore automatically holding position with the heading in the
optimum position for wind and sea conditions. It also has the capability of automatically steering the boat along a plotted course on Raymarine and several other brands of chartplotters.
The Mercury Joystick Piloting is capable of working with 2, 3 or 4 outboards. The Joystick Piloting will be available as an option on many Boston Whaler models with two or more outboards.

The Boston Whaler 350 Outrage is a thoroughly designed offshore performer, blending features tailored for both anglers and cruisers. As the latest addition to Boston Whaler's thoroughbred line, this model emphasizes versatility and robust offshore capabilities, equipped with a range of advanced features and thoughtful ergonomics.
Helm and Bridge Design
The helm is center-mounted and flanked by observer seats on either side, each outfitted with flip-up bolsters and flip-down armrests for enhanced comfort. The dash features a soft-touch finish to minimize glare and reflections on the glass. Optional air conditioning and heating systems provide targeted ventilation for the driver, windshield defogging, and the head compartment. The helm’s waterproof switches are labeled with UV-resistant paint and illuminated by small LED lights, improving nighttime visibility. Instrumentation includes optional 15-inch displays for the observers and a centrally located Mercury SmartCraft display above the autopilot, complemented by a joystick for the standard bow thruster. Keyless ignition systems are integrated at the helm, with keys stored conveniently on the port bulwark. Additional controls such as trim tabs and Mercury’s digital throttle and shift controls are positioned starboard. Overhead storage and a lifejacket bag add practicality. These supercharged engines deliver substantial torque necessary for rapid planing and strong mid-range acceleration. Electronic boost bypass valves ensure consistent power delivery despite atmospheric changes. Propeller configuration includes 19-inch props on the outboard engines and a 20-inch prop on the center engine, with gear cases engineered for offshore durability. A four-inch service platform across the transom facilitates engine access, and daily maintenance points are easily reachable with removable covers. Performance testing revealed a top speed of 47.2 knots at 6,000 RPM, consuming 89.9 gallons per hour and yielding a range of 189 nautical miles. Cruising speed at 4,000 RPM was 29 knots with a fuel burn of 32 gallons per hour, allowing for over 11 hours of operation and a range exceeding 320 nautical miles. The boat planes quickly, reaching planing speed in 4.3 seconds and accelerating to 20 and 30 miles per hour in 6.9 and 11 seconds, respectively. The triple-engine setup simplifies operation with single-lever controls and synchronization features, including a shadow mode that mimics engine RPMs for smoother handling. The 350 Outrage exhibits a solid, stable feel at all speeds, with sport boat-like handling and turning performance. The helm is well protected from wind, maintaining comfort even on warm days without the need for additional ventilation. Acceleration causes a 12-degree bow rise, temporarily reducing horizon visibility until planing speed is achieved, after which trim adjustments optimize running angle. The boat maintains steady, controllable handling from the tower position despite increased wind exposure at higher speeds.

The cockpit deck hatch is secured by four latches and provides access to a spacious utility room housing an optional 7.5 kW generator and four well-secured batteries for easy servicing. The bilge system includes three pumps capable of evacuating 5,100 gallons per hour, supplemented by an optional fire suppression system. Additional systems include a macerator pump outlet and dual livewell pumps, one of which supplies a raw water washdown in the cockpit.
