Boattest.com Review
Overview
The Boston Whaler 345 Conquest is designed for boaters seeking to downsize from larger vessels without sacrificing capability or seaworthiness. It offers a versatile platform suitable for both blue water fishing and family cruising. With a length overall of 35 feet 11 inches, a beam of 11 feet 8 inches, and a shallow draft of 22 inches, the 345 Conquest balances manageable size with offshore performance.
Power and Performance
Powered by triple 300-horsepower Verado outboard engines equipped with 17-pitch Rev4 four-bladed propellers, the 345 Conquest achieved a top speed of 50 miles per hour (43.5 knots) at 6,000 RPM during testing. At this speed, fuel consumption was 81.7 gallons per hour. However, cruising at a more economical 28.1 knots reduced fuel burn to 39.6 gallons per hour, providing a range of 256 nautical miles with a 10% fuel reserve. The boat accelerates with a bow rise of approximately 13 degrees without obstructing forward visibility. It handles turns with a roll of about 17 degrees and exhibits typical offshore boat behavior by shedding water to the sides. While speed decreases during turns, applying power early helps maintain momentum. The vessel cruises with a slight 5-degree bow-high attitude, effectively keeping spray off the windshield. Overall, the 345 Conquest delivers a stable and confident ride in various sea conditions.
Exterior Design and Bridge
The 345 Conquest features a commanding upper helm with excellent visibility and a surprisingly stable ride despite a higher center of gravity. The helm provides secure handling even during aggressive maneuvers. The tower offers outstanding cockpit visibility and precise control, responding instantly to steering inputs and effectively managing water intrusion. The cockpit itself measures 6 feet 4 inches by 9 feet, providing nearly 57 square feet of working space. Fishing amenities include dual fish boxes on either side of the deck, multiple rod holders located on the tower, hardtop sides, cap rails, and transom, as well as under-gunnel rod storage on the port side. An insulated live well and outriggers are mounted on both sides of the tower, with electrical connections and storage for downrigger weights conveniently located below. Ten-inch stainless steel cleats backed by whale board are accessed through hawse holes in the cap rail. Additional storage includes two tackle drawers, general storage compartments, and a dedicated space for a five-gallon bucket.
Cockpit and Deck Features
The cockpit is designed for both fishing utility and family enjoyment. Cushions have been updated from gray to tan, matching the dashboard color for a cohesive aesthetic. Seating converts into a comfortable gathering area, complemented by an electric grill with adjacent storage. The grill includes a safety micro switch that shuts it off when the cover is closed. An optional cockpit table transforms the space into an alfresco dining area, and the aft-facing seat features a pull-out footrest. Forward on the bow, a quick windlass with a stainless steel anchor roller is mounted on the pulpit, accompanied by a hatch for tangle management and a remote control for the windlass accessible from both the bow and helm. Freshwater washdown is located beneath the hatch. The boat’s freeboard measures 31 inches at the hip and rises to four feet at the bow, contributing to its offshore capability. Side decks are protected by 24-inch high rails, and the large foredeck combined with a windshield extending to the hardtop effectively deflects green water and manages spray.
Helm and Electronics
The main helm is equipped with twin 16-inch multifunction touchscreen displays and a Mercury VesselView 7 LCD display below. Controls include a joystick for precise docking maneuvers and digital throttle controls with comprehensive functionality. Climate control is provided with cockpit heating and air conditioning. The upper helm in the tower features a 9-inch Raymarine moving map display, a 7-inch VesselView display, VHF radio speaker, and Mercury’s DTS digital throttle and shift controls. Additional features include a precision pilot control pad, an easily accessible horn, Lenco’s automatic trim adjust system, joystick piloting, and engine start/stop switches.
Interior Living Spaces and Accommodations
Below deck, the 345 Conquest offers a well-designed cabin with abundant natural light flowing through the galley, cabin, and head areas, highlighting rich wood finishes and quality upholstery. The dynamic cabin system allows the couch to convert into a bed with ease, providing comfortable overnight accommodations. While the boat is primarily intended for day use by big game fishermen who may stay ashore overnight, the cabin offers a practical and inviting space for guests.
Conclusion
The Boston Whaler 345 Conquest successfully combines offshore fishing capabilities with family cruising comforts in a downsized, manageable package. It delivers performance comparable to larger convertibles at more economical speeds and offers a versatile cockpit and deck layout suitable for serious anglers and recreational users alike. While overnight accommodations are somewhat modest, the boat’s seaworthiness, handling, and thoughtful design make it a compelling choice for those seeking a capable and efficient offshore express boat.
