Boston Whaler 250 Dauntless: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Boston Whaler 250 Dauntless represents the latest evolution in the Dauntless series, designed to seamlessly transition from a dedicated fishing platform to a versatile family runabout. This 25-foot 8-inch boat offers customizable options that cater to various uses while maintaining the brand's hallmark safety, durability, and attention to detail.

Exterior Design and Cockpit Features

Starting at the stern, the cockpit is designed with a 25-inch depth for enhanced safety and features a self-draining system with large drains on both sides. The aft casting deck is flush-mounted to eliminate trip hazards and includes two rod holders on each side. Centrally located is a 35-gallon aerated bait well beneath a gasketed hatch supported by a stainless steel strut. Seating to port and starboard is ingeniously created by flipping seat backs and attaching lower cushions stored within the same compartment, offering ergonomic comfort. Grab rails are recessed into the bulwarks, with optional high rails available for added security. Additional transom features include a four-step reboarding ladder angled away from the engine's running gear for safety, a freshwater shower with a pull-out wand, and ample storage compartments with stainless steel ball-bearing drawers. The side decks, measuring 20 inches wide, provide safe passage to the bow area, which includes a double-wide lounge seat with flip-down armrests, beverage holders, and integrated speakers. Underneath the lounge seat is a spacious storage compartment capable of housing 7-foot rods, alongside an 18-gallon freshwater tank. The bow area further offers a large sun lounge with convertible seatbacks to form dual shaded lounges, 70-inch rails with integrated beverage holders, and removable cushions that convert the space into a casting platform with insulated self-draining storage and an anchor locker beneath. For sun protection, a bow shade supported by carbon fiber stanchions is available.

Interior Amenities and Head Compartment

Accessed from the starboard side of the console, the head compartment is thoughtfully designed with a grab handle above the door and a door geometry that provides extra shoulder room for ease of entry. The door is mounted on tension hinges to prevent unwanted swinging or banging against the console. Inside, the head is equipped with a standard port-a-potty featuring a pump-out system. The ignition switch is conveniently located on the aft bulkhead of the compartment.

Helm and Operational Features

The helm is positioned to the port side of the console, providing ample room for an observer to starboard. Visibility is excellent through a tempered glass half-windshield with no distortion in the curved side panels. The helm console is equipped with a compass aligned with the wheel, a recessed and self-draining padded surface with connectivity and charging plugs including an inductive charger, and a 12-inch multifunction display mounted above the tilt-adjustable steering wheel. Additional features include a Vessel View 4 display and a Fusion Apollo Series stereo. The helm seat is an upgraded double-wide model with dual-flip bolsters, premium two-tone upholstery, double stitching, and high-density foam, complemented by padded and flip-down stainless steel armrests. Optional helm seating configurations include a leaning post with a flip seat back and insulated storage or a second livewell underneath. Protection is provided by an optional fiberglass T-top with color-matched underside and integrated grab handles, supported by console-mounted supports that preserve side deck space. The T-top includes four rocket launcher-style rod holders and a central tow point. Alternative options include a canvas T-top or bimini for areas with height restrictions.

Power and Performance

The test boat was powered by the standard 300 horsepower Mercury Verado V8 engine, with options for 350 or 400 horsepower. The engine well is contoured to allow the engine to tilt fully out of the water, and a raw water washdown connection is located to port. Battery compartments and switches are conveniently housed under hatches near the casting deck and reboarding ladder. The 250 Dauntless measures 25 feet 8 inches in length overall, with a beam of 8 feet 6 inches and a draft of 15 inches. The boat's empty weight is 3,917 pounds, with an estimated test weight of 5,214 pounds including half fuel and two passengers. Equipped with a single 300 horsepower Mercury V8 turning a 16 by 18 three-bladed inertia propeller, the boat achieved a top speed of 47.3 miles per hour at 5,600 RPM. The optimal cruising speed was 33.2 miles per hour at 4,000 RPM, with a fuel burn of 10.6 gallons per hour translating to 3.1 miles per gallon and a range of 253 statute miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve from the 90-gallon capacity. Acceleration was impressive, with planing achieved in 2.6 seconds, 20 mph reached in 4.5 seconds, and 30 mph in 6.6 seconds. The hull features a redesigned dead rise increased from 16 to 18 degrees, delivering stable and responsive handling with no oscillation during turns. Mercury's Active Trim system automatically adjusts engine trim to optimize performance and prevent propeller ventilation. The hull effectively slices through wakes without allowing spray aboard, exemplifying the premium build quality and design attention typical of Boston Whaler.

Conclusion

The Boston Whaler 250 Dauntless stands out as a thoughtfully designed and well-equipped boat in its class. Its versatility, safety features, ergonomic seating, and advanced performance systems reflect a meticulous attention to detail and quality construction. Whether used as a fishing platform or a family runabout, the 250 Dauntless offers excellent handling, comfort, and durability, promising longevity and enjoyment for generations.
