Boston Whaler 240 Dauntless: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Boston Whaler 240 Dauntless is a versatile center console boat designed to accommodate both family recreation and fishing activities. This model features updated aesthetic elements such as tan cushions and a matching tan dashboard, enhancing its visual appeal while maintaining the brand's reputation for quality and durability.

Exterior Design and Family Features

The 240 Dauntless offers a well-thought-out layout that caters to family-friendly boating. The aft bench seating comfortably accommodates three passengers and includes convenient storage compartments accessible with one hand. For water sports enthusiasts, an optional ski tow pylon is available. Reboarding from the water is facilitated by a stainless steel three-step ladder angled away from the engine for added safety. The helm seat is reversible, providing a comfortable vantage point to observe swimmers off the stern. Forward seating includes a seat ahead of the console and bow seats that flip up to form chaise lounges, creating a large sun pad when the seat backs are lowered. The console houses a standard porta potty, with an optional pump-out head and 4 feet 5 inches of overhead clearance. Additionally, an optional T-top offers valuable shade during sunny conditions.

Fishing Features and Versatility

True to the Dauntless line's emphasis on versatility, the 240 model easily transitions to a fishing platform. Removing the bow cushions reveals a forward casting deck equipped with six vertical rod holders integrated into both sides of the forward seating. The T-top includes flaps with Velcro closures to accommodate fishing rods passing through. All bow storage compartments are insulated, self-draining, lockable, and suitable for use as fish lockers, with the port compartment featuring rod holders. Beneath the forward console seat lies a live well with rounded edges, blue coloring, and internal lighting. The stern features a second elevated casting platform, four transom-mounted rod holders, two additional holders beside the console seat, four rocket launchers on the T-top, and three rod holders on each side of the forward console, totaling sixteen rod holders. A lure and tool holder is conveniently positioned behind the helm seat.

Safety and Build Quality

Safety is a paramount consideration in the design of the 240 Dauntless. The boat features 26-inch high rails that exceed ABYC standards and a cockpit depth of 21 inches. Dual two-inch deck drains on either side of the cockpit facilitate washdowns. The vessel is constructed on Boston Whaler's renowned unsinkable hull with closed-cell foam, providing both buoyancy and structural integrity. Quality components include stainless steel gas support struts on all hatches, robust four-inch stainless steel hinges secured with eight flush-mounted bolts, and welded stainless steel rails. Cleats are integrated into molded pieces backed by whale board, a composite material with triple the strength of typical aluminum. Stainless steel drink holders are recessed into molded compartments. The S-curve tower supports blend seamlessly into the console. For towing, a dedicated tow eye is installed, capable of supporting the entire boat, in addition to the trailer tow eye.

Power and Performance

The 240 Dauntless is powered by a standard 225 horsepower Mercury 4-stroke engine, with an optional upgrade to a 250 horsepower unit as tested. The helm is positioned to the port side of the console and features a hybrid touch Raymarine display, a smart box with dual iPad holders, rocker switches, and two SmartKraft gauges. The steering wheel is mounted on a tilt base, and the ergonomics of the console are well designed, including two footrests and a multi-position seat back for comfortable seated operation. The boat measures 24 feet 8 inches in length overall, with an 8-foot 6-inch beam and a 14-inch draft. Dry weight is 3,300 pounds, with an estimated test weight of 4,653 pounds including half fuel, two people, and upgraded power. During testing, the boat reached a top speed of 48.2 miles per hour at 6,230 RPM, consuming 26.9 gallons per hour. At a more economical cruise speed of 30 miles per hour at 4,000 RPM, fuel consumption was 10.1 gallons per hour, allowing for over eight hours of operation and a range of 242 miles. The boat handles wakes smoothly without pounding, maintains stability in turns with no chine walk or prop ventilation, and exhibits a controlled bow rise of seven degrees on acceleration, settling to a five-degree bow-high attitude.

Conclusion

The Boston Whaler 240 Dauntless demonstrates excellent versatility, combining family-friendly features with serious fishing capabilities. Its robust construction, thoughtful safety measures, and strong performance characteristics make it suitable for both protected waters and ventures into more challenging environments. Overall, the 240 Dauntless is a well-rounded, high-quality boat that meets the diverse needs of recreational boaters.
