Boattest.com Review
Overview
The Boston Whaler 170 Montauk, a classic design celebrating its 60th anniversary, has been completely redesigned from the keel up. This versatile boat offers extensive customization options, allowing owners to configure it according to their specific needs. The model combines traditional styling with modern innovations, making it a notable choice for both fishing and recreational boating.
Exterior Design and Deck Layout
The 170 Montauk features a thoughtfully designed exterior with nearly 18 square feet of open space in the stern area. The transom includes steps for easy boarding and disembarking, which can be reconfigured into jump seats. A full bench seat with ample storage underneath folds down to create a sun pad. The stern also offers a reversible helm seat that provides aft-facing seating, ideal for supervising swimmers or relaxing. Safety is enhanced by high rails measuring 33 inches at the bow and 30 inches at the stern, with options for a full or split bow rail to facilitate boarding. The bow area includes a large casting platform that can be converted into a sun pad with cushions and contains storage beneath. An anchor locker is positioned fully forward. Additional features include a ski tow arch, four rod holders across the stern, and a convenient rail around the windshield to assist movement along the deck.
Helm and Console Features
The helm station has been elevated and widened in the redesign, complementing the increased beam of five inches to a total of 7 feet 3 inches. Despite the wider beam, the boat maintains 20 inches of side deck space on each side. The helm layout is straightforward, emphasizing simplicity with an electrical system, fuel system, and Seastar hydraulic steering. Instrumentation includes a compass aligned with the steering wheel, three gauges (tachometer, fuel, and volts), five rocker switches including a horn, and multiple beverage holders. Connectivity is provided through an accessory plug and a USB port linked to a Fusion stereo system. The adjustable helm seat offers four positions, allowing for forward or aft-facing seating as well as a leaning post configuration. Notably, the console design includes comfortable foot space beneath it, enhancing operator comfort during extended use.
Storage and Additional Amenities
Storage solutions are abundant throughout the 170 Montauk. The area portside of the console provides access to a large storage compartment suitable for quick-grab items, while the starboard side features a recessed fire extinguisher holder and integrated tackle storage. The redesigned fuel system incorporates a built-in 25-gallon fuel tank, replacing the previous carry-on tanks and freeing up additional storage space beneath the seats. Optional equipment includes a Bimini top for sun protection and a choice between a standard PVC rubber rail or an upgraded chrome-over-stainless-steel rail. The bow is equipped with a newly designed combination chalk-nav light assembly.
Power and Performance
The 170 Montauk comes standard with a 90-horsepower Mercury Command Thrust outboard, though the test boat was equipped with a 115-horsepower four-stroke Mercury Command Thrust engine. The boat measures 17 feet 4 inches in length overall, with a hull draft of 12 inches and an empty weight of 1,700 pounds. Including one-third fuel, the test power, and two people aboard, the test weight was approximately 2,521 pounds. Performance testing revealed a top speed of 45.3 miles per hour at 5,900 RPM. The optimal cruising speed was 22.6 miles per hour at 3,500 RPM, achieving a fuel burn of 3.4 gallons per hour, which translates to 6.7 miles per gallon and a range of 151 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve. Acceleration was brisk, with planing achieved in 4.1 seconds and 20 miles per hour reached in 7.1 seconds. The hull redesign features a more routed keel radius, enhancing water adhesion and providing a comfortable roll during turns. The boat handles wakes smoothly with a subtle slicing entry and gentle re-entry, maintaining a dry ride courtesy of the classic bow design that directs the bow wave outward.
Conclusion
The Boston Whaler 170 Montauk successfully blends a classic, proven hull design with modern enhancements and a wealth of customizable features. Its thoughtful layout, comfortable helm, and reliable performance make it a versatile vessel suitable for a variety of boating activities. The redesign has preserved the brand's hallmark dry ride and handling characteristics while adding convenience and storage improvements. Overall, the 170 Montauk remains a compelling option for boaters seeking a compact, capable, and adaptable boat.
