Overview
The Boston Whaler 160 Supersport is a compact, durable, and low-maintenance boat designed with a new hull that enhances ride comfort compared to its predecessor. With a contemporary styling featuring a sheer that slopes toward the transom, the boat appears larger and faster than its actual size. It accommodates up to six passengers, with seating for four midships, which is considered the most comfortable location in various conditions. Two engine options are available: a 75 horsepower and a 90 horsepower Mercury Outboard, allowing for different performance configurations.
Power and Performance
The 160 Supersport measures 17 feet 5 inches in length overall, with a beam of 6 feet 10 inches and a draft of 10 inches when the engine is raised. The test weight, including fuel, two passengers, and gear, was approximately 1,917 pounds. Equipped with a single Mercury 90 horsepower outboard and a 13.5 by 15 Spitfire aluminum propeller, the boat achieved a top speed of 37.3 miles per hour at 5,500 RPM under moderate wind and calm sea conditions. At a cruising speed of 22.3 miles per hour and 3,500 RPM, it delivered a fuel burn of 3.3 gallons per hour, yielding 6.7 miles per gallon and a range of 79 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve. Interestingly, the 75 horsepower version reached a slightly higher top speed of 37.5 miles per hour at 5,500 RPM and demonstrated better fuel economy at 16.5 miles per hour and 3,000 RPM, burning 2.5 gallons per hour for a range of 77 statute miles. The marginally slower speed of the 90 horsepower model was attributed to additional windage from a bimini, towing pylon, and other accessories. The boat features a 15-degree deadrise at the transom, contributing to a comfortable and responsive ride with balanced cornering behavior.
Helm and Controls
The helm console is positioned on the starboard side and is designed with simplicity and functionality in mind. It includes a fixed five-spoke stainless steel steering wheel bearing the Whaler logo, a tachometer, navigation light switch, and a charging port. The all-around navigation light is stored in the bulwark below the throttle shifter and is covered by a stainless steel socket cover. The throttle and shifter are located to the right of the helm, with the ignition key positioned aft. The console offers lockable storage with a gasketed, drainable compartment beneath a heavy-duty stainless steel hinged cover. Optional helm upgrades include a three-spoked wrapped wheel, a black dash cover, and a smoke gray Lexan windshield. A footrest under the console was noted as a desirable addition for enhanced comfort.
Seating and Deck Layout
Four seating configurations are available for the 160 Supersport. The first test boat featured two 19-inch-wide bucket seats mounted 17 inches above the deck, which can rotate, with drink holders positioned between them. The second test boat had a bench seat with fixed backs. Both seat types include molded storage compartments behind the backs. Adjacent to the helm console is a space for a removable cooler, which can be topped with an optional cushion to serve as an observer seat. Bow and Cockpit Features

A raised, padded bow seat measuring 34 by 58 inches can be removed to create a casting deck for fishing. Beneath the bow seat is a self-draining anchor locker with a hinged cover finished on the underside. The anchor setup includes a bow tow eye and cleat, with multipurpose hardware such as the bow light base serving as a fairlead. The aft deck, situated between the transom and helm seats, measures 5 feet 5 inches by 4 feet 5 inches, with an 18-inch cockpit depth on both port and starboard sides. A 40-inch-long shelf with a fiddle is located on the starboard side. Cleats are positioned on the cap rail for secure mooring.
Storage, Fuel, and Additional Equipment
Fuel capacity is provided by two removable 6.5-gallon tanks located beneath the bench seat, with an optional larger 19-gallon tank available, as seen on the second test boat. A 12-volt battery housed in a secured battery box is stored under the helm seat. Swim platforms equipped with optional non-skid photique pads are installed on each quarter, with the port side featuring a telescoping four-step reboarding ladder compliant with ABYC standards. The transom includes lifting eyes and functional cleats integrated into the engine well. The second test boat was outfitted with an optional powder-coated ski tow frame compatible only with the 90 horsepower engine. The boat is trailered on a standard single-axle trailer, with overall external dimensions of 20 feet 10 inches in length (including the swing-away tongue), 7 feet 5 inches in width, and 6 feet 5 inches in height. With the bimini raised, the bridge clearance is 6 feet 3 inches.
