Bluewater 2850: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Blue Water 2850 is a 31-foot center console boat designed for coastal and offshore fishing. It features a deep V hull and is powered by twin 300 horsepower Evinrude E-Tech G2 outboards. This model offers a combination of performance, fishing functionality, and modern technology, making it suitable for serious anglers seeking an affordable offshore fishing platform.

Power and Performance

The Blue Water 2850 has an overall length of 31 feet, a beam of 9 feet 5 inches, and a draft of 20 inches. The test boat weighed approximately 8,251 pounds, accounting for the SeaKeeper II gyro, extra batteries, 91% fuel, test power, and four people aboard—one of the heaviest loads tested for a center console of this size. Powered by twin Evinrude E-Tech G2 300 horsepower outboards with 16 by 19 four-bladed stainless steel props, the boat achieved a top speed of 46.8 miles per hour at 5,000 RPM under real-world conditions with 15-knot winds and calm seas. The best economic cruise was at 4,000 RPM and 34.7 miles per hour, burning 26.2 gallons per hour and yielding 1.3 miles per gallon for a range of 287 statute miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve from the 245-gallon total capacity. Acceleration was brisk, with a time to plane of five seconds, zero to 20 mph in 6.7 seconds, and 30 mph reached in 10.4 seconds. The boat benefits from Evinrude's I-Trim system, which automatically adjusts engine trim during acceleration and turns to optimize performance and reduce bow rise. The integrated I-Steer dynamic power steering provides smooth, adjustable steering resistance, enhancing handling and safety. Docking is simplified with Evinrude's iDock joystick system, which is more economical than comparable systems and allows precise maneuvering, including sideways movement into slips.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The bow features a slightly raised forward casting platform without traditional V-shaped seating. A 7-inch padded bolster surrounds the forward cockpit, which measures 8 feet from the seats in front of the console to the bow bulkhead, with a width of 2 feet 4 inches at the bow expanding to 6 feet 8 inches near the console. The cockpit depth at the bow is 26 inches. Storage is ample, with four foam-insulated, gelcoat-finished lockers including a large 1,200-quart compartment with rod storage centered toward the bow, a smaller locker behind it, and two outboard lockers. The boat is equipped with multiple 10-inch pop-up and fixed cleats recessed to prevent snagging. The forward bulwarks house four Clarion stereo speakers. The fiberglass hardtop includes five rocket launchers, outriggers, radar, antennas, a life raft, and running navigation lights. The underside of the hardtop is equipped with grab rails, controls for the outriggers, an electric box containing the VHF radio, SeaKeeper gyro control, and stereo system, as well as a zippered compartment for personal flotation devices and spreader lights. The hardtop frame is constructed from 2- to 2.5-inch pipe with a textured coating and is securely mounted to the console and deck.

Helm and Console Features

The helm console is wrapped on three sides by a solid polycarbonate windshield set in a canvas frame, providing a cost-effective integrated solution. The console top is flat with a rear fiddle to prevent items from sliding off, though additional rubber mats would improve security for loose items. Instrumentation includes two 16-inch Raymarine displays and an icon-touch engine panel offering customizable data such as cruising information, fuel and fluids, engine status, vessel details, trip logs, and EcoView. The stainless steel steering wheel features a tilt base and speed knob. Controls include Lenco trim tabs, ignition and shift start/stop switches, and ebony drive-by-wire throttle and shift levers. Electrical rocker switches are grouped on the right side, illuminated when active, with circuit breakers below. Four stainless drink holders are positioned on the far right of the console. Storage includes a lockable glovebox beneath the helm and additional compartments in the bulwarks and rod storage below the gunwales. The port side of the console houses a door to the head compartment, which includes an opening port and unrestricted access to wiring. The helm compartment lacks a liner to save weight and cost.

Seating and Cockpit Amenities

The double-wide helm seat features flip-down footrests, bolsters, and armrests, with storage compartments on both sides and a seat keeper. The seat flips forward on gas-assisted hinges to provide access to mechanical components above. The seat back includes four rod holders and additional storage. The cockpit behind the helm seat measures four feet by eight feet and contains a bench seat with bolster and removable headrests across the transom. The bench legs fold up and the seat hinges down to reveal a plexiglass-covered box housing pump switches for bait pumps, bait well lights, freshwater and raw water washdown pumps. The port quarter includes a shore power connection and washdown bib, while the starboard quarter features another shore power connection, bait well fill and drain, and deck drain. Ten-inch fixed cleats are recessed into the cap rails on each stern quarter. The cockpit is designed to be open and functional for fishing, with a 46-gallon live well centered in front of the fold-down transom seat, flanked by two insulated fish boxes. A freshwater sink is located under the port covering board of the transom.

Additional Features and Observations

The transom door on the starboard side opens outward and secures with a slide bolt that currently passes through gelcoat and fiberglass; a stainless steel receptacle would help prevent cracking in this area. The door is 14 inches wide with a 9-inch step up from the cockpit sole. The Armstrong engine bracket platform includes a boarding ladder bracket on the starboard side, with the ladder stowed on the transom. Mechanical spaces containing raw water strainers, fuel filters, and bilge pumps are accessible by lifting the bench seat. Overall, the Blue Water 2850 is designed as a serious offshore fishing boat that balances functionality and affordability, enhanced by the addition of twin 300-horsepower Evinrude E-Tech outboards.

Conclusion

The Blue Water 2850 impresses as a capable offshore fishing vessel with thoughtful design features, robust performance, and modern technological integrations. Its spacious cockpit, extensive storage, and advanced powertrain systems make it well-suited for anglers seeking a reliable and efficient boat. The inclusion of Evinrude's I-Trim, I-Steer, and iDock systems enhances handling, safety, and ease of operation, particularly for less experienced operators. While minor improvements could be made in storage security and hardware durability, the boat offers a compelling package for its class and price point.
