1978 Bertram 31 Flybridge Cruiser

The Bertram 31 is the original deep-V and still the benchmark for a small offshore sportfish. This one has been through a thorough refit covering the hull, running gear, mechanicals, electrical, fuel system, and interior. Systems were replaced rather than patched.

Hull
Solid hand-laid FRP. Hull completely Awlgripped, foredeck Awlgripped with new non-skid. Bottom barrier coated and painted. Bilges painted. Stringers and bulkheads sound, with repair and replacement done during the refit.

Power
Twin MerCruiser 7.4L gas inboards, approximately 330 hp each, closed cooling. Both rebuilt, currently showing approximately 108 hours. New manifolds, rebuilt carburetors, new hoses, wires, fuel pumps, and water pumps. Sea water strainers rebuilt. Complete new exhaust system including mufflers, mounts, hoses, and clamps. Velvet Drive transmissions, 1.91:1.

Running Gear
Both prop shafts replaced with 1-3/8" stainless, up from the original 1-1/4". New couplings, bearings, stuffing boxes, hoses, and T-clamps. Port strut and bolts replaced. Props checked and balanced, 17x18 bronze three-blades. Both rudder shelves, bearings, and arms replaced. New zincs.

Steering
Complete new SeaStar hydraulic system: helm, hoses, cylinder. New Morse controls with neutral start protection.

Electrical
Rewired throughout. New breaker panels, trip-free breakers, amperage switches, engine battery cables, and harnesses to the bridge. New gauges and switches. Shore power panel with galvanic isolator and GFCI outlets in wet areas. ProSport 20-amp charger. Three Group 31 batteries. Continuous copper bonding. Engine alarm system for oil pressure and temperature. Bilge fume detection.

Electronics
Garmin chart plotter with sounder, transducer, and heading sensor. Standard Horizon VHF with AIS.

Fuel and Plumbing
New 5052 aluminum fuel tank, 200 gallons, under the cockpit sole, with new hoses, valves, mounts, and Shields A1 lines. New fresh water pump, fill, and hoses, 28-gallon tank. New head pump. Type III electric macerating MSD. Five new ball valves below the waterline with new double-clamped hosing.

Interior
New headliner, laminate and trim, dinette cushions, and teak and holly sole in cabin and head. Standard 31 layout: convertible dinette, galley, enclosed head, V-berth forward, berths for four.

Bridge and Cockpit
Pompanette flybridge seat completely rebuilt, with new bridge cover and new Bimini. 110 square foot cockpit with cushioned engine boxes and new side panels. Stainless deck hardware, bow and hand rails.

Safety
Three Rule 1500 GPH bilge pumps plus a Rule 1000 in the bow, hard-wired with automatics. High water alarm. ACR 406 EPIRB, ACR remote spotlight, Fyrewatch bilge fume detection, extinguishers in cabin and cockpit. 25 lb plow with chain and rode on a windlass.
