Beneteau Swift Trawler 30: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Swift Trawler 30 by Beneteau offers a compact and more affordable entry into the trawler market, blending the feel and features of a larger vessel with manageable size and handling. Measuring 34 feet 1 inch overall with a beam of 11 feet 7 inches, this boat is designed for coastal cruising with potential for limited offshore use, supported by its CE B8 rating which permits operation in winds up to 40 knots and seas up to 13 feet.

Power and Performance

Powered by a single 370 horsepower Volvo Penta D6 engine driving a straight shaft, the Swift Trawler 30 reached a top speed of 26.4 miles per hour at 3640 RPM during testing. Optimal cruising speed was identified at 3000 RPM, delivering 19.2 miles per hour with a fuel consumption of 13 gallons per hour, translating to a range of approximately 253 miles. Emphasizing its trawler heritage, the boat also performs efficiently at displacement speed, achieving 6.9 miles per hour at 1250 RPM with a fuel burn of 1.4 gallons per hour, enabling an extended range of 843 miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve from its 190-gallon tank. Handling characteristics are notably responsive and comfortable, with brisk, sporty turns and excellent low-speed maneuverability, aided by a bow thruster and a well-designed helm. Docking is straightforward, with minimal steering effort required in reverse, making it one of the easiest single-engine boats to operate.

Helm and Operational Features

The main helm station is thoughtfully laid out with rocker switches featuring clear icons, a 15-inch hybrid touch Raymarine display, and a stainless steel 24-inch destroyer wheel with cable-driven steering. Controls such as trim tabs and bow thruster are conveniently positioned near the digital engine control for ease of operation. The helm seat is double wide, adjustable, and includes a footrest that doubles as a step for shorter captains. Storage solutions are integrated nearby for essential items like VHF radios and binoculars. Visibility and ventilation are enhanced by a two-piece windshield with wipers and a side door that can be latched in multiple positions. The flybridge helm is more modest but functional, equipped with a nine-inch Raymarine display, basic rocker switches, and a collapsible console designed to facilitate bridge clearance for Great Loop navigation. Safety and comfort are maintained with well-designed railings and a secure hatch layout.

Deck and Exterior Features

The Swift Trawler 30 features an asymmetrical deck layout, with a wider starboard side deck measuring 18.5 inches compared to 9 inches on the port side, both protected by high bulwarks—36 inches on the sides and 32 inches forward—to enhance safety. Forward deck equipment includes a Lumar windlass with a stainless steel anchor roller, though the reviewer notes the absence of a dedicated securing method for both chain and rope rode. Access to the anchor rode and remote control is conveniently located on the starboard side. The boat’s design balances safety, functionality, and ease of movement around the exterior.

Systems and Amenities

The vessel is equipped with a 190-gallon aluminum fuel tank and two 30-amp shore power connections, supporting air conditioning and ship’s electrical systems. When away from the dock, a 7.5 kW generator housed under a gas-assisted, gasketed cockpit hatch provides power, with the compartment also offering generous storage space. Electrical controls, including shore-to-generator switching, inverter management, battery and water tank monitoring, and breaker panels, are conveniently located just inside the salon entrance. Main battery switches are positioned beneath the companionway steps for easy access. Sound insulation is enhanced by inch-and-a-half thick foam under the deck and engine hatch, keeping engine noise between 68 and 85 decibels, contributing to onboard comfort.

Conclusion

The Beneteau Swift Trawler 30 successfully brings the trawler experience to a broader audience by combining manageable size, efficient performance, and thoughtful design. Its responsive handling, comfortable helm stations, and practical deck layout make it accessible and enjoyable for owner-operators. While primarily a coastal cruiser, its CE B8 certification and solid build suggest capability for limited offshore passages. Overall, the Swift Trawler 30 is a well-rounded vessel that balances traditional trawler virtues with modern conveniences and ease of operation.
