Overview

The Beneteau Oceana 60 is a recently launched yacht designed to offer exceptional comfort for both ocean crossings and leisurely anchoring. This vessel combines spacious living areas with advanced sailing technology, making it suitable for extended voyages as well as relaxed cruising.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The Oceana 60 features a generous cockpit deck that serves as the primary gathering space while underway. It includes comfortable four-inch thick seat cushions and a teak table with insulated storage, which can be optionally upgraded to a refrigerated table, though the standard version is preferred due to exposure to the elements. The optional factory-installed Bimini and Dodger provide additional protection and are delivered ready to use. The aft platform lowers to extend the working deck area by over two feet in width and nearly nine feet in length, facilitating tender storage and creating a private beach area. The side decks measure 1 foot 7 inches in width and are constructed from fiberglass treated with non-skid material, with teak decking available as an option. The bow is equipped with a Lumar Delta plough anchor mounted on a stainless steel roller, reinforced by a bobstay for spinnaker support. A hatch on the bow leads to crew quarters, which include two bunks, a head, and a sink, and can alternatively serve as a secure space for children.

Helm and Navigation Systems

The dual helms are outfitted with B&G electronics and feature 36-inch carbon composite wheels. A central 19-inch glass deck display replicates information from smaller touchscreen displays at each helm. Controls such as the throttle, binnacle compass, and thruster are conveniently positioned at the starboard helm. Helm seats provide storage beneath and are supported by gas struts when open. Adjacent to the starboard helm seat is a dedicated life raft storage compartment. Below deck on the starboard side, a protected navigation station includes a knob display and charge storage, while the main electrical panel is located in the port guest stateroom. Battery switches are positioned beside the stairs, which lift to reveal access to the main engine compartment.

Engine and Mechanical Features

The Oceana 60 is powered by a 140-horsepower Volkswagen engine, with a 130-horsepower Volvo engine available as standard. The engine compartment is well-lit with two lights and features through-hull fittings positioned forward. Dual alternators ensure efficient battery charging. Access panels on the sides allow maintenance of both the engine and the generator located just aft of the main engine.

Sailing Rig and Deck Hardware

The yacht is rigged with a Seldén three-spreader fractional rig and a Seldén boom vang, complemented by Harken winches and 70mm blocks. The sail handling system includes an electric roller furling jib and a manual roller staysail. All sheets are color-coded and run cleanly back to the cockpit, facilitating short-handed sailing. The deck layout features adjustable jib cars on tracks controlled from the cockpit, allowing for efficient sail trim in varying wind conditions. Winches in the cockpit are electric, two-speed, and self-tailing, with 46-size winches for halyards and sail handling, and 70-size winches for jib handling.

Performance and Handling

During sea trials in 20-knot winds and moderate seas off Florida, the Oceana 60 demonstrated excellent upwind performance and tracking, maintaining good speed without requiring precise steering. Reaching speeds of 11 knots, occasionally peaking at 13 knots at a 125-degree apparent wind angle, the yacht proved fast and responsive. The large rudder provides excellent maneuverability even at low speeds. Under power, the vessel was easy to handle in close quarters, aided by a standard bow thruster that primarily pivots the boat rather than pushing the bow laterally. This characteristic requires sufficient space for maneuvering but allows for precise positioning of both bow and stern using small thruster pulses.

Conclusion

The Beneteau Oceana 60 impresses with its combination of comfort, advanced sailing technology, and ease of handling. Its thoughtful design supports both long-distance cruising and enjoyable day sailing, making it a versatile yacht that meets the expectations associated with the Beneteau brand.
