Beneteau Monte Carlo 4: BoatTEST Review

Overview

The Monte Carlo MC-4 is a 45-foot luxury motor yacht recently launched by Monte Carlo shipyards. Designed with a length overall of 45 feet 3 inches and a beam of 13 feet 4 inches, the MC-4 features twin IPS-500 propulsion pods that provide a draft of 3 feet 9 inches. This model is engineered for efficient performance and comfortable handling, combining modern technology with refined design elements.

Lower Helm and Electrical Systems

The ship's electrical panel is conveniently housed in a cabinet on the starboard side, incorporating a Shiber touchscreen panel for system management. Daily engine maintenance is facilitated by easy access to the IPS-500 engines through a hatch located in the cockpit. An aluminum ladder leads between the twin engines, allowing ample room for routine checks. The forward bulkhead contains the standard 13.5 kW generator, which provides mechanical redundancy to the electrical systems in case of touchscreen failure. The lower helm is equipped with two 12-inch Simrad displays prominently positioned on the upper panel, alongside Volvo Penta EVC displays, digital ignition controls, analog tachometers, and a rudder indicator. Additional controls include trim tabs with LED indicators, bow thruster control, digital engine controls, and an IPS joystick. The helm area is finished with rubberized paint and stitched leather, enhancing both durability and aesthetics. Visibility through the single-piece windshield is excellent, aided by defrost vents, although side visibility is somewhat limited by valances and curtains.

Bow and Deck Features

At the bow, the MC-4 is equipped with a 2-inch tow rail standing 32.5 inches high, surpassing ABYC safety standards. The anchoring system includes a Lumar windlass leading to a stainless steel anchor roller and a Delta Plow anchor. Lift and lock latches provide secure access to the anchor rode, which can be controlled remotely from the bow or from either helm station. While the anchoring setup is well thought out, the absence of a cleat for securing the anchor rode was noted as a minor drawback.

Flybridge and Upper Helm

The flybridge offers spacious and comfortable accommodations with excellent visibility. The upper helm features a single 12-inch Simrad display and digital gauges finished with bubble-pented glass on the port side. Controls include Lemco trim tabs, digital engine controls, an IPS joystick, an optional bow thruster, and a remote control spotlight. The helm seat is constructed with a carbon fiber frame and is notably comfortable, though the lack of a flip-up bolster was mentioned as a potential improvement. The exterior helm shares the same rubberized paint finish found on the lower helm, providing a cohesive aesthetic.

Performance and Handling

During sea trials with two people aboard and 40% fuel, the MC-4 weighed approximately 28,251 pounds. Powered by twin IPS-500 engines, the yacht achieved a top speed of 30.4 knots at 3,500 RPM, consuming 39.5 gallons of fuel per hour. Monte Carlo has effectively matched the hull design to the propulsion system, resulting in consistent fuel efficiency across speeds from 11 knots to top speed, with only a slight variation of one-tenth of a mile per gallon. The most comfortable cruising speed was identified at 22.3 knots and 3,000 RPM, yielding a fuel burn of 26 gallons per hour and a range of 224.3 nautical miles with a 10% fuel reserve, translating to an endurance of approximately 10 hours. Acceleration causes the bow to rise about 15 degrees without obstructing forward visibility from either helm. The yacht exhibits a gentle 9-degree roll in turns at cruising speed and responds predictably, with tighter turns achievable at reduced speeds. The wave splitter hull features a fine entry and nearly vertical stem, optimizing waterline length for efficient operation. When decelerating, the vessel settles stern-first smoothly, facilitating controlled speed reduction. Maneuvering in tight marina spaces was straightforward, aided by the IPS joystick and optional bow thruster, which was primarily used for alignment rather than gusty conditions during testing.

Conclusion

The Monte Carlo MC-4 distinguishes itself as a well-designed, efficient, and comfortable luxury yacht in the 45-foot category. While comparisons to its larger sibling, the MC-5, are inevitable, the MC-4 holds its own with a balanced combination of advanced technology, thoughtful ergonomics, and solid performance. Its helm stations are well equipped and user-friendly, the deck and bow features meet high safety and operational standards, and the propulsion system delivers both speed and fuel efficiency. Overall, the MC-4 represents a compelling option for those seeking a modern, capable motor yacht.
