Beneteau Grand Trawler: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 is the latest addition to the Beneteau Trawler Series, designed primarily for long-distance cruising with a full displacement hull optimized for an economical cruise speed of 9 knots. This configuration provides an impressive range of 1,044 nautical miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve, positioning the yacht well within the passage-making category. Powered by twin MAN 730-horsepower engines, the vessel balances efficient long-range capability with the ability to reach speeds up to 20 knots when desired. The design by Nauta Design Studio emphasizes a harmonious balance between spaciousness and privacy, making the yacht well-suited for extended time aboard.

Exterior Design and Flybridge

The yacht's exterior features a thoughtfully designed aft deck accessed via wide stairs on both port and starboard sides from a submersible swim platform that doubles as a private beach or tender lift. The cockpit area offers flexibility with an option for L-shaped seating and an expandable table, complemented by side fashion plates and an extended bridge deck that provides protection while maintaining unobstructed views through a glass transom, creating what Beneteau terms a 'terrace to the sea.' The symmetrical layout includes wide, protected side decks with high bulwarks topped by stainless steel rails and overhead coverage. Forward on the foredeck, a sun pad with an adjustable aft section converts into a chaise lounge, complete with beverage holders, storage compartments, and pop-up LED lighting. This forward area also transforms into forward-facing seating, enhancing guest comfort. The expansive 31-square-meter flybridge, among the largest in its class, occupies nearly two-thirds of the yacht’s length. It features U-shaped seating for eight around an expandable teak table, a wet bar with sink, electric grill, refrigeration, and ice maker, as well as an L-shaped seating area opposite the helm. The helm station includes three large multifunction displays, thruster controls, autopilot, throttles, and joystick, all under a substantial hardtop with a retractable sunshade. Additional amenities include a sun pad and companionway to the lower helm.

Interior Living Spaces

Inside, the main deck offers 340 square feet of efficiently utilized space with distinct social zones. The salon features satin oak joinery with optional white oak decking and dark walnut window trim, providing a warm and elegant ambiance. A U-shaped seating area wraps around a coffee table to port, complemented by large windows and high overheads that enhance natural light and openness. Opposite, a sideboard offers ample counter space, storage, refrigeration, and a 23-bottle wine chiller, with a 50-inch TV on an electric lift. An alternate salon layout adds a sofa on the starboard side for additional seating. Adjacent is the dining area, elevated by a step, featuring a pedestal table on a sliding mount with L-shaped seating that includes storage beneath for folding chairs. The galley, directly across, can be closed off and is equipped with a full-height refrigerator/freezer, electric induction cooktop with vent fan, dishwasher, Corian countertops, and abundant storage, all illuminated by natural light from surrounding windows. Access to the port side deck is also available from the galley.

Power and Performance

The Grand Trawler 62 is powered by twin MAN engines, each delivering 730 horsepower, backed by a five-year manufacturer’s warranty. The full displacement hull is designed for an optimal cruise speed of 9 knots, enabling a range of over 1,000 nautical miles with a 10% fuel reserve, supported by dual fuel tanks holding a total of 1,022 gallons. The propulsion system includes standard MAN filters with optional RACOR filters, and the yacht is equipped with a quick gyro stabilizer and an Onan generator. The helm stations—both upper and lower—feature advanced navigation and control systems, including multifunction displays, thruster controls, autopilot, throttles, and joystick, facilitating precise handling and ease of operation during extended passages.

Private Accommodations

Below deck, the Grand Trawler 62 offers two layout configurations. The standard layout includes three staterooms and three heads, with a full-beam master suite located midships featuring a center-mounted berth, en suite bathroom with Corian counters, electric flush toilet, and rainfall shower. The master cabin provides extensive storage including nightstands, under-berth compartments, a desk/vanity, and hanging space cleverly concealed behind cabinetry, as well as a 50-inch TV. Forward, the VIP stateroom features an offset berth to port for enhanced walk-around space, ample storage, and an en suite bathroom similar in appointments to the master. The guest cabin includes two single berths convertible to a larger berth, hull-side windows for natural light, storage, and private access to an en suite that doubles as a day head. An optional four-stateroom, three-head layout replaces the master with two staterooms and elevates the VIP to master status. Crew quarters are located aft, accommodating two, and can also serve as additional guest space. The lazarette, accessible from the swim platform, houses a separate head and shower, washer-dryer combination, and provides access to the engine room.

Conclusion

The Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 represents a significant advancement in the brand’s trawler lineup, designed for comfortable and stylish long-distance cruising. Its thoughtful design balances spacious social areas with private accommodations, supported by robust power and efficient hull design for extended range. Attention to detail is evident throughout the yacht, from the versatile exterior spaces and expansive flybridge to the well-appointed interior and functional helm stations. This vessel is well-suited for owners seeking a capable passage-maker that does not compromise on comfort or style.
