Beneteau 41: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Beneteau Swift Trawler 41 represents a distinctive addition to the Swift Trawler lineup, notable for being the first model in the series to feature an aft galley. This design choice strategically positions the galley between two entertainment zones, enhancing the flow and comfort throughout the main living and social areas. The boat offers versatile configurations, including two- or three-stateroom layouts, allowing owners to select based on functional preferences rather than solely size.

Galley and Main Deck Layout

The galley is arranged in a U-shape on the port side, equipped with a double basin sink and thoughtfully designed dish storage with internal sorters. Cooking options include a propane stove with a gas oven beneath, or alternatively, an electric burner paired with a microwave. A practical feature is the gas-strut assisted hatch that opens to reveal the cooktop. Waste management is cleverly integrated with a flush-mounted trash receptacle accessible through a lift-up serving area, facilitating easy removal of trash bags. Additional storage is abundant, with compartments above and around the refrigeration and ice maker units. The galley opens to the cockpit via a wide five-foot door, although the L-shaped counter reduces the opening width to just under three feet.

Cockpit and Exterior Gathering Areas

The cockpit features L-shaped seating along the stern and port side, which can be expanded by sliding the seats back after releasing bolt latches, thereby increasing usable space. Storage compartments, including propane storage, are located beneath the seats. The ladder to the flying bridge can be repositioned forward to further enlarge the cockpit area. Overhead, the extended flying bridge deck provides shelter at a height of seven feet one inch, equipped with grab handles, LED lighting, and a recessed perimeter designed to house an optional roll-up enclosure discreetly. The swim platform extends the outdoor space with a teak deck and measures three feet eight inches in depth when the cockpit seat is moved forward. It is molded into the hull for robustness and can accommodate a tender or personal watercraft with various launching options, including davits. Safety features include stainless steel framed acrylic gates and asymmetrical side decks with protective bulwarks and overhead coverage.

Flying Bridge

The flying bridge serves as a comfortable social area featuring L-shaped seating with adjustable backs on the port side and an aft-facing chaise lounge on the starboard side. The dining table is available in fixed or expandable configurations, with the expandable table supported by an additional leg to extend across the seating area. This space is protected by a Bimini top outfitted with LED lighting, creating an inviting environment for outdoor gatherings.

Forward Deck and Additional Exterior Features

Forward on the main deck, the boat offers a sun pad atop the trunk cabin measuring 68 by 81 inches, with a fixed headrest. Side protection is provided by 30-inch rails mounted on seven-inch tow rails. The foredeck is accessed via three steps, each nine inches high, and the overall design emphasizes safety and comfort in exterior lounging spaces. The aft deck includes a spacious 6 feet 9 inches square area enclosed by 34-inch high rails exceeding safety standards. A hatch reveals an electric grill, cutting surface, sink, refrigerator, and trash receptacle, enhancing the outdoor cooking and entertaining experience. Optional features for the sedan version include a sunroof, solar panels, and kayak racks.

Interior Living and Dining Areas

Inside, the forward gathering area is elevated by a five and a half inch step and features a unique U-shaped seating arrangement not previously seen in the Swift Trawler series. This space is designed for comfortable dining and socializing, with ample ventilation provided by an opening window to port and an opening door to starboard, facilitating excellent flow-through ventilation. The seating converts into a berth with a dedicated curtain track system that allows the area to be enclosed independently, maintaining privacy and darkness without restricting access to doors or windows. The table is mounted on fixed pedestals for stability, and the space includes integrated speakers connected to the surround sound system and a designated TV mounting area. The flooring is a textured Beneteau laminate, enhancing both appearance and tactile quality.

Private Accommodations and Heads

The master stateroom is located forward and offers a spacious and airy environment with 6 feet 4 inches of overhead clearance and a berth measuring 64 by 79 inches. Natural light enters through hull-side windows on both sides, each with integrated port lights, as well as an overhead hatch. Storage is plentiful around and beneath the berth. Entertainment amenities include a stereo system and a flat-screen TV mount. The master head is split into two sections: a shower compartment on the starboard side featuring teak decking, a teak seat, an opening port, and an overhead hatch; and a separate water closet on the port side with a vacuum flush toilet, sink, large mirror, opening port, and overhead hatch. High-quality stainless steel latches with recessed magnetized closures ensure quiet and secure door operation. The port-side double stateroom includes two opening port lights, ample storage, and an optional filler cushion to convert the twin berths into a queen-size berth. Opposite this is a guest wet head with a shower, vessel sink, mirror, opening port, and vacuum flush toilet, also equipped with heating and air conditioning vents. A third stateroom with a single berth and opening port light is available, or it can be converted into a large storage area with an optional washer-dryer installation.

Conclusion

The Beneteau Swift Trawler 41 continues the series' tradition of functional innovation, offering a variety of new features that enhance onboard comfort, usability, and social interaction. Its unique aft galley layout, versatile interior configurations, and well-considered exterior spaces provide a balanced blend of practicality and leisure. This model allows prospective owners to select a vessel that best fits their lifestyle needs, emphasizing function alongside size. Overall, the Swift Trawler 41 presents a thoughtfully designed and well-appointed option within the trawler market.
