Bayliner VR6: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Bayliner VR-6 is a thoughtfully designed runabout that emphasizes spaciousness and versatility within a length overall of just over 22 feet. By extending the interior all the way to the back of the running surface and incorporating a molded swim platform, Bayliner has effectively created a boat that offers a full 20 feet of usable interior space while maintaining a price point comparable to smaller 20-foot models. This design approach results in a roomy, comfortable vessel that balances functionality and affordability.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The VR-6 features a beam-forward hull design that carries the beam well into the bow area, expanding from 5 feet 8 inches aft to 2 feet 9 inches at the foremost point. This creates a notably roomy bow section with wide, comfortable seating and a forward bolster that allows for rear-facing positions. The bow area can be enhanced with an optional table for entertaining or converted into a sun pad using a filler cushion. Storage compartments are generously sized and located beneath all seating areas, with large openings for easy access. The cockpit continues the theme of social versatility with wraparound seating that integrates seamlessly into a forward companion seat featuring a reversible backrest that can also lay flat for sunbathing. Opposite this is a single seat, and with the helm seat swiveled around, the entire cockpit becomes a convivial gathering space. At the stern, a sun pad converts into a chaise lounge, and a thoughtfully angled walkthrough hatch provides convenient access without compromising seating space. The full-beam sun pad extends 2 feet 1 inch and can be protected with optional C-deck rubber matting. Additional exterior conveniences include a port console that can house a porta potty, an enclosed head rare for this class and size, and a recessed area atop the console with a rubberized surface and stainless steel drink holder. Water sports enthusiasts will appreciate the custom-made, collapsible tower with a forward bimini extension and elevated toe point, designed for easy storage in garages or rack rooms. The wet storage compartment at the walkthrough hatch offers a practical space for masks, snorkels, tow lines, and wet gear.

Interior Features and Fit

The VR-6 exhibits an elevated level of fit and finish uncommon at its price point. Seating surfaces incorporate multiple textures and colors, complemented by contrast bead welting and stitching that enhance the aesthetic appeal. The bow area is designed with a beveled edge to channel water runoff away from the seats, preventing pooling and enhancing comfort. The windshield features a black anodized frame with optional side wings, while the deck is covered with snap-in carpet laid over a diamond-pattern non-skid fiberglass surface. The boat’s construction eschews traditional wood stringers in favor of a non-wood composite structure, improving durability and maintenance. Storage compartments are fully finished inside, and in-deck storage hatches are supported by gas struts for ease of use. The exterior hull presents a two-tone color scheme with a high-gloss mirror finish, accented by plentiful stainless steel hardware.

Helm and Controls

Bayliner has adopted a modern helm design for the VR-6, featuring a central pod with angular sides housing two analog gauges and a trim gauge, with an optional depth gauge positioned below. The helm panel is finished in a dark tone with a faux carbon fiber accent that lends a touch of sophistication. A notable ergonomic improvement is the angled recessed area on the panel, which prevents items from sliding into the operator’s lap during acceleration. This area includes a protective rubber mat, an MP3 port on one side, and a 12-volt accessory plug on the other. The drink holder is functional and conveniently placed. The engine hatch doubles as the backrest for the aft seating, though lifting it requires moving the seat cushion forward due to a curved lower lip.

Power and Performance

The VR-6 comes standard with a 200-horsepower, 4.5-liter engine paired with an alpha drive. Upgrades include a 250-horsepower, 4.5-liter Mercury Cruiser engine available with either an alpha or Bravo 3 outdrive. Our test boat was equipped with the 250-horsepower engine and achieved a top speed of 48.7 miles per hour at 5,500 RPM. Optimal fuel economy was observed at 3,000 RPM and 27.2 miles per hour, where the boat consumed 5.6 gallons per hour, yielding a range of approximately 144 miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve. The VR-6 demonstrated quick acceleration, reaching planing speed in 3.4 seconds, 20 miles per hour in 5.6 seconds, and 30 miles per hour in 8.5 seconds. Handling was notably responsive and stable, with no prop ventilation or sliding during aggressive maneuvers. Some chine walk was detected but was easily controlled by moderating power during turns. The boat’s 39-inch freeboard contributed to a dry ride, with smooth passage over self-generated waves and no discomfort or pounding experienced.

Conclusion

The Bayliner VR-6 is a compelling successor to the 215 bowrider, offering significantly more interior space and a swim platform that extends beyond the running surface. It combines comfortable accommodations, thoughtful design features, and strong performance in a package that presents a more upscale appearance than its price might suggest. The VR-6’s spacious layout, practical amenities such as an enclosed head, and solid handling characteristics make it a versatile option for those seeking a mid-sized runabout with enhanced usability and style.
