Boattest.com Review
Overview
The Bayliner Element F-18 is a center console fishing boat that builds upon the proven Element hull design. It offers an affordable entry-level fishing package, combining practical features with a versatile layout suitable for both protected and shallow waters. The boat is designed to appeal to entry- to mid-level boaters seeking a comfortable and functional fishing platform.
Fishing Features and Deck Layout
The Element F-18 is equipped with dual casting decks located at the bow and stern. The bow casting deck measures 6 feet 2 inches by 3 feet 9 inches and includes a pedestal base for a swivel seat. It is pre-rigged for a trolling motor, with battery trays conveniently positioned beneath the center of the casting deck. The aft deck features a raised tow rail for safety when moving around, and a 25-gallon livewell is centrally located on this deck. Rod storage is ample, with three vertical holders on each side of the console as well as under-gunnel compartments. Storage access is facilitated by three deck hatches at the bow, each secured with lift and lock latches and straps to prevent damage. The forward seat cushion lifts to reveal additional storage, which can be optionally converted into another livewell. An integrated cooler is located beneath the helm seat, suitable for storing food, drinks, or the day's catch, while another storage compartment is positioned below the helm.
Seating and Comfort
Seating arrangements include a forward seat just ahead of the console, equipped with a grab handle and a padded seat back attached to the console for added comfort. The helm seat is double-wide with a reversible seat back, allowing for both forward and aft-facing seating. Behind the helm seat, two jump seats are positioned on either side of the casting deck, each fitted with grab handles for security. Foot placement on the helm seat frame and side gunnels further enhances stability. The deck features small drains behind the seat bases to prevent water accumulation, and overall deck depth ranges from 22 inches at the bow to 23 inches at the stern, with two-inch deck drains on each side leading overboard.
Helm and Operational Features
The helm is designed with functionality in mind, featuring an acrylic windshield framed by a stainless steel grab rail. Instrumentation is minimalistic, with two gauges and an optional Lowrance Elite 3X fish finder mounted to the right. The steering wheel is located to port, adjacent to a switch panel on the right side. A recessed area provides storage space that is channeled to drain water away, although a 12-volt power plug is absent here; instead, a 12-volt receptacle is available in a more exposed location nearby. Beverage holders are conveniently positioned on either side of the helm.
Power and Performance
The Element F-18 measures 18 feet in length overall, with a beam of 7 feet 6 inches and a hull draft of 12 inches. The boat's empty weight is 2,000 pounds, and with half fuel and two people aboard, the test weight was approximately 2,510 pounds. It can be powered by either a Mercury 115 horsepower four-stroke or a 90 horsepower four-stroke engine, with sufficient engine well depth to allow full tilt out of the water. During testing with the 90 horsepower engine, the boat reached planing speed in 2.4 seconds, accelerated to 20 miles per hour in 6.1 seconds, and achieved 30 miles per hour in 13.5 seconds. The top speed recorded was 35.1 miles per hour at 5,500 RPM, with a fuel consumption of 8.4 gallons per hour, yielding a range of 113 miles. Optimal fuel economy was observed at 3,500 RPM and 21 miles per hour, where fuel burn dropped to 3.2 gallons per hour and range extended to 180 miles, maintaining a 10% fuel reserve.
Handling Characteristics
The Element's M hull design contributes to stable and predictable handling, particularly appreciated by entry-level boaters. The boat exhibits flat turning capabilities and maintains a nearly level attitude when transitioning on and off plane. Trimming requires minimal adjustment, with four shots of trim being sufficient to achieve optimal performance; exceeding this leads to porpoising. The steering wheel provides feedback during trim adjustments, pulling slightly before settling into a centered position, indicating the ideal trim setting. The hull’s design also facilitates ease of loading onto a trailer, enhancing its appeal for recreational users.
Conclusion
The Bayliner Element F-18 successfully combines affordability with a well-thought-out feature set tailored for fishing enthusiasts. Its dual casting decks, ample storage, comfortable seating, and efficient power options make it a versatile choice for protected and shallow water environments. The boat's handling and trailerability further enhance its suitability for entry- to mid-level boaters seeking a reliable and practical fishing platform.
