Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Bayliner 245 is a newly introduced model from Bayliner, designed to offer a versatile and comfortable boating experience. This boat features a spacious cockpit, efficient use of space, and thoughtful amenities that cater to both day cruising and overnight stays. Equipped with a 220 horsepower Mercury 5-liter engine, the Bayliner 245 balances performance with practical onboard features.

Exterior Design and Cockpit Features

The boat's exterior includes a swim ladder conveniently tucked under the swim platform, aligned with the cockpit door to allow the operator clear visibility of people boarding or disembarking. Grab rails and side steps provide multiple boarding options beyond the main cockpit door. The transom includes covered storage with a simple snap-in cover, designed for durability and ease of use. The cockpit itself is roomy and comfortable, although it currently lacks an option for a pedestal table, which would enhance usability. The engine hatch is accessible with latches on both sides, though it opens somewhat narrowly, making entry slightly cramped.

Power and Engine Compartment

Under the engine hatch, the Bayliner 245 houses a 220 horsepower Mercury 5-liter engine with ample access around it for maintenance. The port side of the compartment includes a hot water heater, an optional feature on this model, as well as air conditioning, which is also installed on the test boat. These additions enhance onboard comfort, particularly for extended trips or overnight stays.

Helm and Instrumentation

The helm area is clean and uncluttered, featuring full instrumentation with rocker switches arranged on both sides. While a depth gauge is not included, there is sufficient space to add one, along with a small moving map display if desired. Controls such as trim tabs, wiper, and lights are located on the starboard side, while the horn, bilge pumps, blower, and accessory switches are on the port side. The helm seat offers two-position footrests and a comfortable design that allows the occupant to face aft or swing around to engage with passengers. Storage beneath the helm seat includes battery switches and DC system fuses. Notably, the steering wheel does not tilt, and circuit breakers are positioned below the helm.

Bow Area and Forward Amenities

The bow area features non-skid surfaces and a modest 7-inch step down to the working section, with bow rails rising to 32 inches for safety. The forward seating consists of a comfortable V-shaped arrangement that converts into a berth, supporting overnight use. On the port side, the boat includes a Kenyon alcohol stove with drop-down potholders and a single basin stainless steel sink. Below deck, a Norco dual voltage refrigerator provides convenient food storage. The mid berth measures 6 feet 6 inches by 4 feet 5 inches, located on the starboard side ahead.

Conclusion

The Bayliner 245 presents a well-rounded package for boaters seeking a compact yet comfortable vessel suitable for exploring waterways and enjoying overnight stays. Its thoughtful layout, practical features, and optional amenities like air conditioning and hot water heater make it a versatile choice. While some minor enhancements such as a pedestal table in the cockpit and a depth gauge at the helm could improve functionality, the overall design and performance of the Bayliner 245 make it a compelling option for recreational boating.
