Baja 34: BoatTEST Review
Overview
The Baja 340 Sportfish presents itself as a versatile vessel that blends the qualities of a dedicated sport fishing boat with those of a fast, family-oriented cruiser. Designed to accommodate a variety of activities including fishing, diving, and casual cruising, this model offers flexibility and performance in a single package. Its well-crafted hull and customizable features make it suitable for both serious anglers and recreational boaters.
Exterior Design and Deck Layout
The 340 Sportfish features a thoughtfully designed exterior that maximizes space and functionality. The aft cockpit spans nearly the full beam of the boat and is enclosed on three sides by deeply padded combing cushions, providing comfort and protection. This area includes an insole hatch for storage and easy access to engine oil reservoirs for quick level checks. The aft bench seat accommodates two and can be easily flipped down or up with one hand to adjust seating arrangements. On the port side, a locker provides direct access to battery switches and includes a fresh water spigot for washdowns, part of the Sportfish package. Additional highlights include extra-wide walkways from the cockpit to the foredeck, achieved by recessing grab rails into the gunnels and positioning two drink holders on each side. Non-locking rod racks and large insole fish boxes measuring five feet in length are also integrated for fishing convenience.
Helm and Control Features
The center console helm is designed to optimize space and functionality, featuring twin manually adjustable bolster seats with deep padding and high-quality vinyl upholstery. The helm station is positioned to port and includes a stainless steel tilt wheel and a tall acrylic windshield reinforced with a stainless steel rim for durability. The Sportfish package enhances control with key Caper racing controls, in-handle trim mounted midships, and dual-ram K-plane trim tabs equipped with LED indicators. These features enable precise tuning of the boat's balance and performance at speed.
Interior Living Spaces
Forward of the helm, the 340 Sportfish offers practical amenities for family and crew comfort. An enclosed, plumbed port-a-potty is integrated into the design, featuring a ventilation window and convenient access to electrical fuses. The Clarion CD changer is also located in this area. Two jump seats with accompanying lockers provide additional seating and storage options, suitable for both dry and wet gear. The bow houses a basic V-berth that serves as a storage area or a resting spot, ideal for brief naps while waiting for fishing action.
Power and Performance
Baja has emphasized lightweight construction and performance in the 340 Sportfish. The hull is built using hand-laid biaxial laminates combined with end-grain balsa coring in the decks and hull sides, resulting in a fighting weight of approximately 6,100 pounds. Despite its length of over 34 feet, the boat remains trailerable without a permit due to its beam of 8 feet 6 inches. Powered by twin 250 horsepower Mercruiser EFI engines, the boat accelerates onto plane in 4.9 seconds and achieves a top speed of 61.9 miles per hour at wide-open throttle. Its large 272-gallon fuel tank supports cruising ranges exceeding 300 miles. The hull design, free of steps, allows the boat to carve through high-speed turns without cavitating the props, ensuring smooth handling.
Conclusion
The Baja 340 Sportfish successfully merges the attributes of a high-performance sport fishing boat with those of a versatile family cruiser. Its flexible design, comfortable accommodations, and strong performance capabilities make it suitable for a range of activities from serious fishing expeditions to leisurely family outings. This model exemplifies Baja's commitment to delivering a well-rounded, fast, and functional boat that adapts to the needs of its owners.
