Baja 245 Performance: BoatTEST Review
Overview
The Baja 245, introduced in 2004, is a performance-oriented boat designed to meet diverse boating needs. It serves as a likely successor to the popular 232 model, offering over a foot of additional length and an enhanced cockpit area. This model incorporates advanced hull manufacturing techniques, including a full fiberglass stringer system and the removal of plywood from the cockpit upholstery, reflecting Baja's commitment to quality and durability.
Exterior Design and Cockpit
The Baja 245 features sporty styling consistent with the brand's reputation, extending down to the helm details. The captain benefits from a functional and straightforward layout, with engine gauges positioned above a tilt steering wheel. To starboard, zero effort controls, drive and trim tab switches, and a switch panel for powered accessories are conveniently arranged. The cockpit comfortably accommodates five adults, with manually adjustable drop-bottom bolster seats for the skipper and companion, allowing for both standing and seated positions. Additional seating includes an aft bench and a spacious engine hatch sun pad. Practical features such as six cup holders and multiple grab handles are strategically placed within easy reach. Beneath the foredeck lies a small, minimalist cabin with a basic V-berth that provides a comfortable resting spot and concealed storage beneath the cushions. The electrically operated engine hatch reveals ample space for maintenance tasks, including an anchor holder on the port side. An optional swim platform extends the boat by over two feet and includes a folding swim ladder, ski tow eye, and a stereo remote control for the Clarion CD player.
Dimensions and Handling
The Baja 245 measures 24 feet 5 inches in length with a beam of 8 feet 6 inches and a draft of 34 inches when the Bravo stern drive is fully lowered. It has a dry weight of 4,100 pounds. The hull features a 23-degree dead rise running surface, contributing to excellent handling and ride quality. Baja's choice to avoid stepped bottom hulls in this design supports a smooth and stable ride.
Power and Performance
Equipped with an optional upgraded power package delivering 375 horsepower, the Baja 245 demonstrated robust performance during testing. It achieved a top speed of 62.5 miles per hour at 4,850 RPM and maintained a brisk cruising speed of 35.5 miles per hour at 3,000 RPM. Fuel efficiency at cruising speed was measured at 3.07 miles per gallon, providing a range of approximately 221 miles. This balance of power and efficiency underscores the boat's capability as a versatile performance cruiser.
Conclusion
The Baja 245 successfully combines sporty styling, solid construction, comfortable accommodations, and strong performance into a well-rounded package. Its thoughtful design elements and handling characteristics make it appealing to performance boating enthusiasts, while its price point remains accessible. Overall, the 245 stands out as a compelling option for those seeking a versatile and enjoyable boating experience.
