Azimut 40: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Azimut VRV 40 represents Azimut Yacht's inaugural venture into outboard-powered vessels, designed as a sophisticated and upscale weekender that transcends the typical large center console or sport boat. Drawing conceptual inspiration from center console boats, the VRV 40 combines the desirable traits of speed, ease of maintenance, and outboard power with the spaciousness and versatility of an express cruiser hull. This design aims to accommodate a wide range of owner needs, from family day boating to extended weekend cruising.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The VRV 40 features a commanding helm station centrally located amidships, equipped with three custom ergonomic seats upholstered in plush, weatherproof material. Each seat includes flip-up bolsters and adjustable armrests, with the captain's chair offering electric adjustments for height and position. Directly behind the helm is a versatile bench seat facing aft toward the cockpit, which can be repositioned to create additional space or snug up against the helm seating. The cockpit itself is highly configurable, anchored by a 37 by 57-inch electrically powered high-low table surrounded by an L-shaped wraparound lounge, accommodating four to six guests for dining or socializing. This table can also be lowered to form the base of an expansive sun pad with filler cushions. A hardtop provides seven feet of headroom and includes an optional SureShade retractable awning for added comfort. Twin entertainment stations flank the cockpit: to port, a wet bar with sink, removable cutting board, ice maker, and trash receptacle; to starboard, an electric barbecue grill with adjacent cutting board and refrigerator, with options to upgrade refrigeration or add an ice maker. The boat incorporates innovative features such as a fold-down side deck that doubles as a 47 by 47-inch swim platform with a retractable boarding ladder, facilitating easy water access for swimmers and divers. Forward of the triple outboard engines lies a conventional swim platform measuring 37 inches at its deepest point, equipped with hot and cold water shower facilities and boarding access from floating docks. The side decks are finished in teak, measuring 16 inches wide, leading forward to generous bow seating with two facing sofas and an elevated sun pad featuring adjustable backrests and integrated drink holders.

Interior Living Spaces

Access to the VRV 40's interior is gained via a sliding plexiglass door framed in stainless steel, located just to port of the helm. The lower deck offers 6 feet, 3 inches of headroom and is finished with wood decking throughout. The galley, positioned to port, features a 74 by 23-inch Silestone countertop with a window above fitted with blinds and a 32-inch HDTV mounted at the aft end. It is equipped with a 17-gallon refrigerator, induction cooktop, sink, faucet, trash can, and ample storage housed within Canaletto walnut wood veneer cabinetry, notable for its horizontally running grain that visually expands the space. Gray oak veneer is also available as an option. Opposite the galley, the dinette includes a wraparound sofa with concealed storage beneath and a wood dining table mounted on a stainless steel adjustable pedestal. This table can be lowered flush with the sofa to accommodate filler cushions, converting the area into an additional berth measuring 53 by 70 inches.

Private Accommodations

Forward of the galley and dinette, accessed through a space-saving sliding wooden door, lies the master cabin. The master berth measures 53 by 75 inches and features a synthetic leather-upholstered bed frame with locker storage beneath, providing access to the bow thruster and air conditioning unit. The cabin is well-ventilated with opening portholes to port and starboard, each outfitted with blinds, and an overhead hatch that can be blacked out. Storage closets flank both sides of the cabin, finished in the same wood veneer as the main living areas. Climate control is managed via the standard VRV air conditioning system mounted on the port bulkhead. The yacht's head is located aft and to starboard, offering 80 inches of headroom and dimensions of 58 inches side to side and 32 inches fore and aft. It includes a shower area separated by a sliding curtain that keeps the sink and counter dry, a Tecma electric toilet with macerator, a ceramic wash basin with stainless steel faucet, and wood-topped counter space with storage drawers for linens and towels. A mirror vanity and holding tank monitor panel complete the head's appointments.

Conclusion

The Azimut VRV 40 successfully blends the comfort, luxury, and accommodation features of an express cruiser with the open entertainment and water sports capabilities typical of large day boats. Its innovative design, high-quality finishes, and versatile layout make it well-suited for family weekend cruising and a variety of recreational activities. The boat retains the distinctive style and craftsmanship associated with Azimut Yachts, marking a notable entry into the outboard-powered segment. For a comprehensive understanding of its performance and operational characteristics, further review of on-water testing is recommended.
