Boattest.com Review

Overview

The Aviara AV36 is a 38-foot luxury dayboat that expands the 30-foot bowrider category by offering both inboard and outboard power options. Our test model featured triple Mercury Verado 300 outboards with 20-inch pitch stainless steel Mercury Inertia props. Measuring 38 feet 6 inches in length with a 10-foot 10-inch beam and a 3-foot 6-inch draft, the AV36 is designed to blend performance with refined aesthetics and modern amenities.

Power and Performance

During testing, the AV36 demonstrated a top speed of 55.8 miles per hour at 6,000 RPM with a loaded displacement of 16,507 pounds, including crew, gear, and fuel. Economical cruising was achieved at 4,000 RPM, delivering 33.7 miles per hour while consuming 33.4 gallons per hour, equating to roughly one mile per gallon and a range of 209 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve. Acceleration was notable, reaching 0 to 20 mph in 5.1 seconds, 30 mph in 6.9 seconds, and 40 mph in 10.5 seconds. The boat planes quickly at 3,600 RPM within 4.2 seconds, maintaining minimal bow rise for excellent visibility. Handling was responsive and precise, requiring minimal helm input with a lock-to-lock turn count of four. Docking was facilitated by a Mercury joystick system, making close-quarter maneuvers both intuitive and enjoyable.

Exterior Design and Helm

The AV36 features a clean, angular exterior design with high-quality finishes evident in details such as lighting, cleats, latches, and seadeck patterns. The warm, customizable color scheme complements the sophisticated aesthetic. The helm area offers elevated control with a hand-stitched, tilt-mounted helm seat and excellent visibility from both seated and standing positions. Instrumentation includes a 10-inch systems display, 12-inch Garmin chartplotter, and 7-inch Simrad engine display, all arranged for ergonomic operation. Additional features include push-button accessory switches, engine start buttons, trim tab controls, and a padded compartment housing the VHF radio. Unique amenities such as cup coolers integrated into the helm area enhance comfort. The full wraparound windscreen with rounded edges and a single wiper provides protection without obstructing sightlines. Access to the bow is through a 20-inch wide portside passage, secured by wind dam and windscreen doors.

Cockpit and Bow Areas

The cockpit is designed for both comfort and functionality, featuring a 3-foot 7-inch by 1-foot 6-inch double-wide scalloped seat with cool-feel vinyl that slides fore and aft and includes a bolster. Adjacent companion seating mirrors the helm seat’s finish and dimensions. The main cockpit area includes a 7-foot 4-inch headroom above the helm, tapering to 6 feet 9 inches aft, with an L-shaped seating configuration that conceals ample storage beneath. The port companion seat converts into an aft-facing chaise lounge. Beverage holders, grab handles, and USB ports are plentiful throughout. The bow area serves as a private retreat with fully cushioned 20-inch deep seats, grab rails, speakers, drink holders, audio controls, USB ports, and insulated, drainable storage compartments beneath the seats. The ground tackle is neatly stowed in a fiberglass-lined locker with a gas-assisted hatch, housing a Lumar windlass, wash-down pump controls, and local windlass remote.

Galley and Amenities

The AV36’s galley is outfitted with Korean countertops and offers either a single or dual grill option, complemented by optional refrigeration doors and a forward sink. Storage compartments and a 110-volt outlet with speaker are located nearby. The transom seating area opens to reveal shallow storage and access to the main battery switches, fuses, and shore power connections. Additional utility access includes a centerline deck hatch near the helm providing entry to the hot water heater, freshwater tank, and waste discharge pump, with fuel shutoffs positioned just aft.

Hardtop and Cabin

The reinforced aluminum hardtop features angular styling consistent with the boat’s overall design and provides 8.5 feet of bridge clearance. Integrated speakers are concealed behind aluminum grating on either side, and a power retractable sunshade deploys quickly in two available colors. The cabin door opens to port with magnetic closures, leading down three 9-inch steps to the interior. Inside, optional amenities include a 32-inch TV with sound bar and a microwave. The single forward stateroom offers privacy, while the head to starboard provides 5 feet 6 inches of seated headroom.

Transom and Swim Platform

The transom seating area includes three chaise seats backed by three height-adjustable piston stools, creating a versatile social space. The swim platform spans 10 feet 9 inches in width with port and starboard wings measuring 1 foot 10 inches each. Even with engines fully trimmed, the platform maintains 10 inches of through-axis clearance. The platform and deck surfaces feature a custom C-deck pattern unique to the AV36, combining aesthetics with functionality.

Conclusion

The Aviara AV36 successfully merges luxury, performance, and thoughtful design into a versatile dayboat capable of comfortable overnight stays or entertaining. Its powerful triple outboard configuration delivers strong acceleration and efficient cruising, while the elevated helm position and ergonomic layout provide confident handling and control. The clean, angular styling and quality finishes extend throughout the exterior and interior spaces, complemented by modern amenities such as a gourmet galley, advanced audio system, and customizable features. Overall, the AV36 stands out as a refined and capable addition to the luxury bowrider segment.
