Aquila 45 Sport: BoatTEST Review
Overview
Outboard-powered day boats are increasingly popular, yet large models often come with a high price tag and significant risk in choosing the right one. The Aquila 45 Sport stands out as a unique offering in the 40-plus foot day boat category, especially compared to the typical monohulls. This 45-foot catamaran combines the spaciousness and comfort of a floating private island with powerful performance, boasting 1,200 horsepower and speeds exceeding 50 miles per hour. Designed for both entertaining and overnight stays, it accommodates up to 16 adults comfortably.
Exterior Design and Deck Features
The Aquila 45 Sport features innovative terrace doors on both port and starboard sides that, when lowered, expand the beam from 15 feet to 19 feet 4 inches, creating an expansive cockpit area comparable to that of a mega yacht. The 15-foot beam is the widest in its class, and the boat’s shallow two-foot draft allows access to shallow waters and sandbars. The terrace doors are designed without visible pistons or cables, providing a clean aesthetic and unobstructed movement along the sides of the boat. The aft seating area comfortably accommodates eight guests with adjustable backrests that convert into sun pads either in the sun or shade. An electric sunshade extends from the hardtop to cover this area, enhancing comfort. Storage compartments are integrated beneath all seating, allowing guests to stow personal items neatly. Entertainment is supported by a hidden TV in the galley center and premium Fusion JL Audio speakers positioned both below deck and on the hardtop. A freshwater shower at the transom provides convenient rinsing after water activities.
Power and Performance
Unlike many competitors that require triple or quad outboard engines totaling up to 1,800 horsepower, the Aquila 45 Sport achieves impressive performance with just two 600-horsepower outboards, reaching speeds over 54 miles per hour. This streamlined propulsion setup reduces mechanical complexity and increases reliability. The design also maximizes open deck space at the stern, allowing the entire crew to enjoy the swim platform comfortably. Safety features include substantial handrails on both sides, a robust swim ladder suitable for all ages, and safety gates on port and starboard to secure pets or small children while underway.
Galley and Entertainment Amenities
The galley area is well-equipped for entertaining, featuring two electric Kenyon grills concealed beneath the counter, a refrigerator, and configurable storage options including additional refrigerators, coolers, ice makers, or drawers. Electrical outlets are conveniently placed for appliances such as blenders. The coaming pads along the sides are finished with elegant two-tone diamond stitching, including an embroidered 45 Sport logo. Dedicated trash storage is available on both sides, helping maintain a tidy environment.
Helm and Hardtop Features
The helm is sheltered by a spacious 200-square-foot hardtop that offers excellent protection from the elements. Ambient LED strip lighting runs around its perimeter, complemented by RGB LED puck lights overhead that can be customized to suit any mood. A long grab handle on the exterior provides safety and stability for guests moving about the boat. The optional black gel coat on the hardtop reduces glare on navigation screens, enhancing visibility and comfort for the captain.
Private Accommodations
The cabin provides a remarkably spacious and comfortable sleeping area for two, featuring a bed measuring 80 by 78 inches—wider than a standard household king-size bed. Skylights and accent lighting create a pleasant ambiance, while reading lights are positioned at the head of the bed. Storage is ample, with cabinets at the foot of the bed and a nightstand with drawers on the starboard side. Controls for lighting, door locking, USB, and 110-volt outlets are conveniently located. An opening hull-side window adds ventilation. The adjacent head includes a rain shower head, a bench over the electric flushing toilet, storage behind the toilet, and a vanity with a large mirror. Notably, steps on the backside of the cabin door provide access to the hardtop, which serves as an additional leisure space equipped with roof racks for securing water toys or kayaks and ample room for sunbathing.
Bow and Storage
Forward storage is surprisingly spacious, with a locker estimated to be nearly 20 feet wide, capable of holding large quantities of supplies such as water, beverages, luggage, and food for extended trips. The bow features a large sun lounger that comfortably seats four to five adults, with insulated storage underneath that can function as a cooler or fish box. This area enhances the boat’s suitability for entertaining and extended cruising.
Conclusion
The Aquila 45 Sport is a thoughtfully designed catamaran that successfully blends high performance with spacious, versatile living and entertaining areas. Its wide beam, shallow draft, and efficient twin outboard setup distinguish it in the day boat market, while its ample seating, storage, and luxury accommodations make it ideal for groups and overnight stays. With a competitive price point and innovative features, it offers a compelling option for those seeking a high-speed, comfortable, and functional day boat experience.
