Overview

The Aquila 32S is a versatile catamaran designed primarily as a sport day boat with the capability to serve as a comfortable weekender. Its design leverages the wide beam typical of catamarans to maximize usable space and functionality. This model stands out by combining thoughtful design details with practical features aimed at enhancing both comfort and performance.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The bow area of the Aquila 32S is notably spacious, benefiting from the catamaran’s broad beam. The walkthrough to the bow is offset to the starboard side, providing generous seating with two seats separated by 22 inches and elevated 13 inches above the deck for ease of access. These seats feature flip-down armrests and are complemented by deep storage compartments and separate stereo zones to accommodate different sound preferences. The upholstery is two-tone with diamond stitching, available in mocha or storm gray, and includes carbon fiber beverage holders. A pop-up sunshade is available as an option. The anchor system includes a quick windlass with chain and rope storage, a center-mounted cleat, rollers, and a swivel anchor connection. The bow is equipped with four nine-inch pull-up cleats for secure mooring. The walkthrough to the cockpit is 24 inches wide, with an opening windshield secured by a catch and an air dam held by a post and socket.

Cockpit and Galley Features

The cockpit area takes full advantage of the 12-foot 8-inch beam, offering seating for at least 11 to 12 people around a fixed, expandable table. Storage is abundant beneath the seats, including insulated compartments for coolers and beverage holders. The aft seats are multifunctional, capable of converting into a double-wide chaise lounge or sun pad, and provide access to mechanical rooms housing bilge pumps, water pumps, air conditioning pumps, a 5 kW generator, batteries, and more. The port side galley includes a sink with a cover held by a small post, an electric grill operable via inverter or generator, a refrigerated drawer, and a wastebasket with a turn-and-lock latch. Stainless steel grab rails surround the cockpit for safety and convenience. The cockpit is protected by a standard hardtop standing six feet eight inches above the deck, featuring two forward-opening hatches, speakers, LED lighting, and an optional extendable SureShade awning.

Private Accommodations and Head

The Aquila 32S offers a cabin below deck with six feet two inches of headroom, a berth measuring 79 inches in length and 52 inches in average width, and ample storage including shelves and hull-side windows with opening ports for ventilation. The cabin includes air conditioning and a 110-volt outlet, making it suitable for weekend stays or comfortable naps. The head compartment, located starboard in the cockpit area, also provides six feet two inches of overhead clearance, Corian counters, a wet head with a pull-out sprayer, an electric flush toilet, and ventilation through a hull-side window and overhead hatch. Air conditioning and a 110-volt outlet are also present in the head. Both the cabin and head feature offset stairs requiring careful foot placement when entering.

Helm and Navigation Station

The helm features a carbon fiber panel with an offset compass to accommodate a 12-inch Raymarine display and a VesselView display beneath it. A Fusion stereo system is integrated into the flat panel, with push-button electrical switches located below a stainless steel grab rail. The helm seat is a double-wide 45-inch unit with two flip-up bolsters, while the observer seat opposite has a reversible seat back, flip bolster, and flip footrest. Storage compartments and grab rails are conveniently positioned nearby. The joystick for joystick piloting (JPO) is positioned to the right of the helm, though its location was noted as less than ideal, with suggestions to reposition it for improved visibility and control when docking. The steering wheel is mounted on a tilt base, and the throttle and shift controls are digital. An angled footrest is provided, though a recessed toe space would enhance comfort.

Hull Design and Features

The hull design incorporates a rub rail extending down the stem to protect the boat during beaching. The entry is narrow to optimize performance through waves, and the hull features an asymmetric chine configuration with two chines on one side and three on the other, including a wave splitter between the hulls to reduce spray and wave impact. Notably, the boat is engineered to accommodate future hydrofoil installations, with structural caps in place for this upgrade, which is currently under development and will be available aftermarket.

The Aquila 32S measures 32 feet 4 inches in length overall, with a beam of 12 feet 8 inches and a draft of 1 foot 10 inches. Standard propulsion consists of twin 225 horsepower Mercury Verado outboards, though the test boat was equipped with upgraded 300 horsepower engines featuring joystick piloting. With 14.6 by 17 pitch inertia props spinning up to 5800 RPM, the boat achieved a top speed of 44.8 miles per hour. Economic cruising at 3000 RPM yielded 16.3 miles per hour with a fuel burn of 12.9 gallons per hour, translating to approximately 1.3 miles per gallon and a range of 319 statute miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve from the 280-gallon total capacity. Acceleration to planing speed took 6.5 seconds, with 20 mph reached in 7.4 seconds, 30 mph in 11.6 seconds, and 40 mph in 19.7 seconds. Handling characteristics include minimal bow rise during acceleration, level attitude in turns without leaning, and smooth passage through chop without hull slap or pounding. Docking is facilitated by the wide engine spacing and responsive joystick controls, requiring minimal input to maneuver precisely.
