Alumacraft Classic 165: BoatTEST Review
Overview
The Alumacraft Classic 165 CS is a compact side console fishing boat measuring 16 feet 4 inches in length overall with a beam of 6 feet 10 inches. Weighing only 895 pounds empty, this vessel is easily trailerable by most vehicles. It is designed to accommodate an outboard motor with a 20-inch shaft, and in this review, it was powered by a reliable Evinrude 50 E-Tech engine.
Hull Construction and Handling
The Classic 165 features riveted construction with double bow plates, enhancing hull rigidity. The main hull thickness ranges from one and a half to two millimeters, supplemented by an additional set of one and a half millimeter plates at the bow to withstand pounding. This robust construction results in a hull that exhibits minimal flex and eliminates the oil drum effect commonly experienced in similar boats. On the water, the 165 maintained tight turns and tracked well through waves without any tendency to jump off course.
Console and Deck Layout
The boat’s side console is slightly off-center, which was noted as a minor ergonomic issue causing some discomfort over extended periods. A suggested improvement would be to shift the console three inches to port or the seat three inches to starboard. The console instrumentation includes basic gauges such as a speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, and voltmeter, complemented by alarms for low oil level and engine overheating. The windscreen effectively reduces wind exposure, enhancing operator comfort. To the right of the console, rocker switches control interior lighting, navigation and anchor lights, bilge pump, and live well aerator, each protected by circuit breakers located beneath. Engine controls include a trigger throttle for gear engagement and an external trim control; steering is non-feedback but adequate for the boat’s size and purpose.
Seating and Storage
Standard seating includes three seats, supported by six pedestal bases distributed across the fore and aft elevated decks. The cockpit sides feature carpeted rod storage compartments with stainless steel piano hinges and lockable lids. Additional storage is available aft, including a dedicated compartment for the engine starting battery. Fuel is filled via a port quarter fill point. The bow area contains three compartments: two forward and starboard storage compartments adjacent to a pedestal base, and a port-side compartment designed for the trolling motor’s deep cycle battery. Just behind these is a 34-gallon aerated live well.
Power and Performance
Equipped with a 50 horsepower Evinrude E-Tech outboard and a 15-inch propeller, the Classic 165 achieved a top speed of 29.6 miles per hour at 5600 RPM. At this speed, fuel consumption was 4.7 gallons per hour, yielding a fuel economy of 6.36 miles per gallon and an estimated range of 114 miles. Operating at a more economical cruising speed of 19.2 miles per hour at 4000 RPM, the boat consumed only 2.1 gallons per hour, improving fuel efficiency to 9.16 miles per gallon and extending range to approximately 165 miles with a 10% fuel reserve. The vessel demonstrated quick acceleration, reaching planing speed in 3 seconds and 20 miles per hour in 6.4 seconds. Additionally, the boat was fitted with a Minn Kota 55 PD trolling motor for enhanced maneuverability during fishing activities.
Conclusion
The Alumacraft Classic 165 CS is a well-constructed, easily trailerable fishing boat that combines durable hull design with practical features tailored for anglers. Its solid handling characteristics, efficient powerplant, and thoughtful storage solutions make it a capable vessel for both casual and serious fishing excursions. Minor ergonomic adjustments to the console layout could further improve operator comfort, but overall, the Classic 165 offers a balanced package for its size and intended use.
