The Alerion Express 28, designed by the late Carl Shumacher, hearkens back to the original "Alerion," the daysailer that Nathaniel Hereshoff designed and built for himself in the early years of the last century.  While her graceful overhangs fore and aft and her sweeping sheerline hint at the beauty and tradition of the original Alerion, the underbody, rig and sails of the Alerion Express 28 are thoroughly modern.  These features combine to make this boat one of the prettiest and best-performing daysailers on any harbor anywhere.  Very few sailors can resist looking longingly at these boats, whether tied up in the slip or effortlessly cutting through the water under sail.

This 2003 Alerion Express 28 is offered for sale by her second owner, who purchased her in 2013.  She has spent most of her life in fresh water, first on the Finger Lakes of New York and later on the Great Lakes.  She was shipped overland to Charleston in May of 2021.  She has always been well-loved and cared for and is ready to go sailing today.

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 2003 Alerion Express 28 is widely appreciated for its blend of classic styling and modern performance, making it a standout in the daysailer/cruiser category. Here are some of the key pros and cons:

Pros

Elegant Design: The Alerion Express 28 features timeless lines with a clipper bow and moderate sheer, combining traditional aesthetics with contemporary build quality.

Performance: With a fractional sloop rig and a well-balanced hull, it offers responsive handling and good speed, making it enjoyable for both casual sailing and more spirited day sails.

Quality Construction: Built with attention to detail and high-quality materials, the boat is known for durability and solid craftsmanship.

Comfortable Cockpit: The spacious cockpit is designed for easy handling and comfort, accommodating crew and guests without feeling cramped.

Practical Interior: While compact, the interior provides essential amenities and clever use of space, suitable for overnight trips or weekend cruising.

Easy Trailerability: At 28 feet with moderate displacement, it is relatively easy to trailer and launch compared to larger yachts.

Cons

Limited Interior Space: Due to its design emphasis on performance and style, the cabin space is cozy, which may feel tight for extended cruising or for larger groups.

Price Point: The Alerion Express 28 tends to be priced higher than some competitors in its size range, reflecting its quality but potentially limiting options for budget-conscious buyers.

Engine Size: Some owners find the standard auxiliary engine underpowered for challenging conditions or extended motoring.

Limited Storage: Storage areas are modest, which can be a consideration for longer trips requiring more gear.

Sail Handling: While manageable for experienced sailors, the fractional rig and sail plan may have a slight learning curve for beginners.
