Absolute 50 Fly: BoatTEST Review

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Absolute 50 Fly is a contemporary flybridge yacht designed for comfortable cruising and entertaining. Although a tropical storm prevented an on-water sea trial during this review, detailed operational insights and performance data provided by Absolute offer a comprehensive understanding of the vessel's features and capabilities.

Exterior Design and Bridge

The flybridge helm is starboard-mounted and features a Lexan dash with a 15-inch Garmin display, Volvo Penta EBC display, IPS joystick, digital throttle and shift controls, and quick windlass operation for the bow. The helm seats are bucket-style with wrap-around bolsters and flip-up extensions, complemented by a stainless steel-framed smoke glass windscreen that enhances the yacht's sleek profile. The aft deck is equipped with heavy-duty chocks, stainless steel rollers leading to 10-inch cleats, warping winches with foot controls, and ample fender storage beneath the seats. The transom includes grab rails that transition into cleats, dual 50-amp shore power cords, fresh water and deck washdown systems, electric cord reel controls, and an overhead camera for stern visibility during docking. Access to the crew quarters is located on the port side of the aft deck.

Interior Living Spaces and Crew Quarters

Forward of the companionway lies the head compartment, featuring a seat that folds down over the toilet, generous headroom ranging from 6 feet 8 inches standing to 5 feet 7 inches sitting, a shower wand with bracket, and a glass vessel sink. The crew quarters on the starboard side include a single berth with windows facing the transom. Safety is enhanced by a system that signals the helm when the crew door or swim platform is open or lowered.

Deck and Walkaround Features

Access to the bow is via three 7-inch steps at the stern. The side decks maintain an 11-inch width with 12-inch bulwarks and 28-inch rails, providing secure passage. Fuel and water fills are located aft on the side deck, with a clever cap system to prevent fuel spills during refueling while allowing water drainage during washdowns. Midship areas include blackwater discharge points and cleats recessed into the bulwarks. The bow is outfitted with cleats atop the tow rails, eliminating the need for chocks, and features a recessed anchor roller supporting a 35-kilogram polished stainless steel Ultra Anchor with swivel. The anchor is managed by a quick windlass with remote control, and the chain road leads to an accessible all-chain rode locker. Additional bow amenities include bungees for dock line storage and a freshwater washdown.

Engine Room and Mechanical Systems

The engine room is accessed via a hatch on the aft deck, with a removable ladder for convenience. It houses twin Volvo Penta D6 IPS 650 engines directly connected to their pods. Fuel tanks are positioned forward on either side, featuring sight tubes and cross-feed capability, with fuel filters mounted externally. Water lines are clearly labeled for ease of maintenance. Centrally located is an optional SeaKeeper 6 gyro stabilizer, with the hull stringers pre-engineered to accommodate this system. A 21.5 kW Cummins generator is situated aft between the engines, alongside the port-side air conditioning system and engine start batteries. An optional 600-gallon-per-day water maker is installed on the aft bulkhead. Controls for the water maker, tank levels, and temperature are conveniently located just inside the galley.

Main Deck Helm and Operational Features

The main deck helm is starboard-mounted with a soft-touch dash and twin 16-inch Garmin displays set into a carbon fiber panel. A large compass is aligned directly with the tilt-mounted steering wheel, flanked by air conditioning vents. Rocker switches are positioned on both sides of the wheel, with additional controls including a bubble pen to EBC display, SeaKeeper control panel, digital throttle and shift, bow thruster, and IPS joystick arranged for intuitive, one-handed operation. A notable feature is the opening side door providing quick access to the side deck and midship cleats, facilitating single-handed docking with excellent side visibility. The helm seats are double-wide with a continuous bolster and fore-and-aft sliding capability, complemented by a conveniently located footrest. Visibility is afforded through two separate windshields measuring 35 inches wide by 41 inches high.

Performance Data

According to Absolute's test data, the 50 Fly, powered by twin 480-horsepower IPS 650 engines, achieved a top speed of 29 knots at 3845 RPM. The best cruising speed was recorded at 27.4 knots at 3600 RPM, with a fuel consumption of 44.1 gallons per hour. This performance translates to approximately 0.6 nautical miles per gallon and a cruising range of 236.5 nautical miles, maintaining a 10% fuel reserve from the total capacity of 422.68 gallons.

Conclusion

The Absolute 50 Fly impresses with its spacious and thoughtfully designed operational areas, blending functionality with style. Despite the inability to conduct an independent sea trial due to weather conditions, the detailed inspection and provided performance metrics indicate a vessel well-suited for comfortable cruising and entertaining. The integration of advanced systems such as the SeaKeeper gyro stabilizer and IPS propulsion, combined with practical deck layouts and ample storage, underscore the yacht's versatility and user-friendly design.
