Twin wheels, a cockpit you can stretch out in, and a transom that folds down into a swim platform. Below, three cabins with real double berths, an owner's suite forward with its own head and shower, and enough light through the hull windows that you never feel like you are "down in the boat." Katara is the configuration of the Sun Odyssey 439 that lets you bring the whole family or another couple, sail hard on the way there, and slip into the shallow creeks that deep draft boats have to sail past.
- Three cabins, two heads. Forward owner's cabin with island berth and private ensuite head and shower
- Shoal draft keel at 5 feet 2 inches
- Fractional sloop rig, deck stepped mast, in mast furling mainsail and furling genoa, electric winches
- Code Zero from Evolution Sails with furler - New never used
- Stern arch with 400 watts of solar, Victron charging, Starlink
- Highfield CL310 hard bottom RIB with a Suzuki 20 hp four stroke, roughly two hours on it
- New bottom August 2026 - Soda blasted to bare gelcoat, new barrier coat, and new ablative antifouling
- Yanmar 4JH5CE 54 hp diesel - 400 hours
The Sun Odyssey 439 was designed by Philippe Briand and built by Jeanneau in France. Solid fiberglass hull, injection moulded and balsa cored deck, hard chines aft, twin rudders and twin helms. The hard chine carries volume aft, which is what buys the 439 its interior room without the boat sailing like a barge.
From 10 to 18 knots the boat comes alive, and above 20 it is an absolute blast. The owner's best day aboard was 25 knots of breeze, surfing down the waves, seeing 11 knots and closing on 12. The boat reefs easily and sets up well for foul weather, and the twin rudders keep bite when it heels, which is exactly when a single rudder boat starts to have weather helm and round up . It also single hands well. Both helms have full sightlines, the lines are led aft, and the electric winches make for easy sail trimming.
The three cabin layout is what makes this 439 work for more than a couple. The forward owner's cabin has an island berth with its own head and shower. Both aft cabins are proper doubles with hanging lockers rather than storage spaces with a mattress in them. The galley is L shaped with double stainless sinks, a propane oven and refrigeration.
The shoal draft keel is 5 feet 2 inches instead of the standard 7 feet 2 inches, Katara gets into the shallow creeks and skinny anchorages. Point the boat south and that same draft turns the ICW into a route, and it keeps the Bahamas on the table.
The systems are set up for staying out rather than plugging in. Four 100 watt panels on the stern arch feed a Victron charging and monitoring system across an AGM house battery bank. Starlink sits on the same arch, and three zones of reverse cycle air conditioning cool the boat while on shore power. The Highfield CL310 and its Suzuki 20 have roughly two hours on them. It still has that new dinghy smell!
Katara is on the hard at Bert Jabin, which means a buyer can look at the new bottom, new thru hulls, the folding prop and the saildrive before a survey day.
This is a boat for someone who wants to cruise for extended periods of time and have the ability to comfortably bring a full crew.
