ROBERT PERRY DESIGN

Robert Perry's design provides for a narrow hull with beam tapered slightly in aft.  The sheer rises slightly stern to bow. Bow is plumb with a fine entry.  A formidable stainless bowsprit provides a 2-anchor roller system purchase for genoa and jib on Harken roller furlers.

Perry has designed the hull with deep sections bow to stern with 60% of engine below the waterline, which moves center of gravity low, increasing stability and payload capability thus radical beam is not needed for stability.  The deep forefoot reduces pounding in seas and adds buoyance forward, thus Perry has used a 5'4" keel draft to optimize hydrodynamic lift in this custom model of his Saga 35. With the plumb ends the 34 foot effective waterline length and makes the hull form work through the water for virtually the entire length of the boat.  Thus the Saga MAX waterline hull.

Construction

Hull and deck are built of hand-laid fiberglass around Baltek balsa core. Resin content is monitored to achieve high strength-to-weight ratio.  ISO-NPG gelcoat is applied for resistance to osmotic blistering followed by 2 layers of glass and vinylester, then polyester in remaining plys.  Non-woven bidirectional E glass is straight forward non-exotic combining good strength, low crimp, light weight with reduced resin wet out sensible core in tapered to solid glass wherever through hulls and hardware attach.  Bulkheads and furniture are tabbed to hull & deck for structural integrity.  The hull deck joint occurs along a solid-glass inward flange. The reinforced E Glass subfloor grid stiffens the hull and accepts the rig load and external keel.  No surprises, just well-engineered boat building.

Rig is Saga design by Perry.  A variable geometry rig with a self tacking 100% upwind blade and an overlapping reaching genoa.  With Shaefer roller furling boom with multiple reef points this rig is easily handled in any wind/seastate and quick & easy to power up or down at a moment with minimal effort.  Self-tacking through a tight space is easy with boom traveler centered & jib trimmed perfectly, port to starboard with only a slight rudder change you can easily tack under absolute control.

This is not a racer but a purpose-built fast cruiser with the number it can easily compart to the speed of a J boat and the stability of a Valiant.  Thus Perry has created the perfect fast cruiser with displacement/length 162 and sail area/displacement 19.5.
