Overview

The Galleon 470 Sky is a distinctive express cruiser that integrates the sleek profile of a traditional express with the elevated operating station of a flybridge. This combination aims to offer both sporty aesthetics and enhanced visibility for the operator. The vessel measures 47 feet 5 inches overall, with a beam of 14 feet 4 inches that extends to 18 feet 7 inches when the side balconies are deployed, and it draws 2 feet 11 inches of water.

Bridge and Helm Stations

Access to the Skybridge is via a staircase located on the port side of the cockpit deck. The upper helm station is well-equipped, featuring a 12-inch Raymarine display, a side power bow thruster control stick, a Fusion stereo system, and digital engine controls positioned to the right. Additional instrumentation includes a Raymarine autopilot, a recessed compass, and a Volvo Penta EVC display. The lower helm maintains a clean and functional layout with a 12-inch Raymarine display, a 7-inch EVC display, and a Raymarine autopilot. Operator comfort is enhanced by two climate control vents directed at the helm seat, which is double-wide, upholstered with diamond-stitched pattern and multi-density foam, and mounted in a fixed position. The helm area also features a matte walnut finish with a Holley inlay, exemplifying the brand’s consistent quality. Electrical panels and controls are conveniently located near the helm for ease of access.

Engine Room and Mechanical Systems

The engine room is accessed through a hatch in the aft deck, revealing twin Volvo Penta D8 engines rated at 600 horsepower each. These engines are connected to V-drive transmissions and straight shafts, spaced 23 inches apart, with a headroom of 4 feet 4 inches for comfortable maintenance access. Forward bulkhead houses two fuel tanks with attached filters and a centrally located fire suppression system. A cross-feed system allows fueling from either side. The compartment also contains raw water pickups, electrical system connections, and battery banks. The chilled water air conditioning system is installed to port, operating quietly without compressor cycling during the night. The Fisher Panda generator features an exhaust diverter that directs noise downward below the boat, minimizing disturbance at anchor. Control panels for the generator and air conditioning system are located starboard inside the salon.

Deck and Exterior Features

The swim platform is equipped with 11-inch cleats on both sides, complemented by stainless steel engine room vents and additional cleats above. Line storage is conveniently positioned below the cleats. On the starboard side of the cockpit, controls for the black water tank level, pump out, and emergency stop are accessible. Side decks measure approximately 14 inches in width, with rails rising to 28 inches at midships, and gates provide secure access. The ground tackle system includes a quick windlass with an all-chain rode leading to a recessed bow roller, foot control switches on the port side, and a cleat for securing the rode. A remote control spotlight is mounted just outside the bow area.

Performance and Handling

During testing with an estimated displacement of 39,271 pounds (accounting for 47% fuel, 70% water, and four passengers), the twin Volvo Penta D8 600 horsepower engines propelled the 470 Sky to a top speed of 30 knots at 3100 RPM. The most economical cruise speed was 22 knots at 2400 RPM, where fuel consumption was 38 gallons per hour, yielding a range of just under 206 nautical miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve from the total 396-gallon capacity. The boat reached planing speed in approximately 9.5 seconds and accelerated through 20 miles per hour in 17.8 seconds. The hull design allows the vessel to remain on plane down to speeds as low as 10.8 knots. Although testing occurred in calm conditions, the boat demonstrated no adverse characteristics such as hull slap or pounding when crossing waves, consistent with Galleon's reputation. Responsiveness to helm inputs was notable, and the combination of straight shafts and bow thrusters facilitated precise maneuvering in tight quarters.

Conclusion

The Galleon 470 Sky successfully blends the express cruiser style with the elevated visibility and control of a flybridge. It offers solid performance with efficient twin 600 horsepower Volvo Penta engines and a thoughtfully designed helm layout that prioritizes operator comfort and functionality. The mechanical systems are well-organized and accessible, while the exterior features support practical handling and docking. Overall, the 470 Sky delivers the handling characteristics and quality craftsmanship expected from Galleon, making it a compelling option for those seeking a versatile and capable cruiser.
